About Brett

I am a management veteran of three Fortune 500 companies. Good writing, grammar and thought transferal through written text have been integral to the performance of all of my positions. I have loved writing my entire life and have a Bachelor of Arts from Colorado State University in English. As well, I have a Master of Science in Leadership from Robert Morris University, and am working on a Ph.D. from Johnson University.

I have produced texts on everything from composition, to industrial procedure, to research papers and consider myself a competent generalist. I also teach English as a second language and specialize in grammar and vocaublary improvement. My TESOL Certificate Number is 2(concealed information)092 and certifies me for advanced teaching interaction.

The most important reason to hire me, though, is that I am passionate about writing, and compassionate about student's and professional's challenges with the art.

I teach English as a second language, and feel that teaching writing is a natural extension of this.

In addition, I love writing in any form.  So teaching and tutoring writing is one of those elusive jobs that not only provides a means by which to live, but is fun.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English from Colorado State University, more than 25 years of business and institutional writing experience, and am working on a Ph.D., thus have doctoral level research writing experience.

My typical process for working with new students progresses through four stages. First, I attempt to determine the students general feeling about writing.  Does he enjoy writing, but just desires some refinement? Does she dislike writing and avoid doing it at all costs? Is the student afraid of writing and, in particular, grammar? Second, the student and I identify his or her strengths and discover hidden strengths. If one knows his strengths, there is a basis of comfort and confidence from which to approach weaknesses. Third, the student and I will identify weaknesses or fears.  Last, we will set short-term goals and long-term goals.

All of this can be done by asking the student to write a paragraph, then discussing it when she is finished.

High school students, middle school students, and professional individuals.

A teacher can have a great set of credentials, and have years of teaching experience, but without passion for writing, and without compassion for others' writing challenges, the teacher will have poor results.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Do I like writing and merely need some refinement? Or, do I dislike writing and also need help finding what will engage me with it?  Do I fear writing and grammar?

2. What are my short-term and long-term goals for this tutoring endeavor?

3. What is limiting my ability - skill, or a mental block, or fear?
