About Jennie

I enjoy learning and sharing knowledge about the world with others. I like to get organized and understand the root of the problem at hand, that way I know foundational skills are sound and true learning can proceed.

I graduated in 2016 from California State Long Beach with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy and Geography. My focus was in Human Geography, making connections between people and the environment. I am currently studying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Rio Hondo College.

I am currently not a teacher but am exploring the possibility of becoming a professor one day at the junior college level. I'd like to teach GIS courses or Intro to English.

B.A. in Philosophy and Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Passed the CBEST Exam, Excel, Word, Essay Writing, Research papers, Proofreading, Homework helper for my kids (ages 13 & 15)

First I like to hear what the student is studying. It's important to hear the "why" something is difficult to a student, that way I can examine where the confusion stems from. Once I get an idea of the difficulty, I ask about specific problems that are difficult. I like to illustrate one as an example. I also like the student to try a problem without my help so I can see where the trouble may arise. Then I'll review concepts that would help to get past the misunderstanding.

I have mostly been a tutor to my own children as they have been growing up. I am familiar with the current Common Core homework. I have also assisted friends in my school career with editing, proofreading, and clarifying ideas.

My area of expertise is problem solving, essay writing, and the basic reading and writing for K-12. If I were a student who needed help in essay writing, I would ask, "How do you get started writing a big essay?" It's a good question to ask, because sometimes that's the hardest part! Organization, breaking down a big project into parts, brainstorming, and finding a spark or connection to what you need to write are all important to get started.

I recently helped my daughter get through her pre-algebra homework that involved fractions. I could see her struggle through the problems, but finally she was able to complete the problems on her own. I recalled when I was younger and needed a lot of help with fractions. I could hear myself explaining how to solve for x when there are fractions involved in the same manner my tutors explained it to me. I felt good that I could help her solve her own homework, thanks to tutors that once helped me. :)

Questions to think about: What makes it hard to approach or solve this problem?

What part of my homework/assignment is easy, and what part is hard?

Is there a specific word or procedure that I need more help understanding?
