About Nigel
I can explain stuff by breaking it down to the simplest possible form, and then relating the subject matter to something that the studend already understands and is interested in. I have my degree in Biology and I am also interested and excel in math, history, physics, and chemistry. The biggest barriers to learning are
1. Lack of interest/motivation
2. Lack of connection to the real world/life experience
The way I teach is by helping students understand WHY the information they're learning is important, how it relates to them, and how it relates to the other information they've learned. This encourages them to remember and actively use the information rather than just memorize it for a test. Once the understanding is there, the student will probably remember what they learned for a long time.
I enjoy the feeling of "aha, that's how it works" both in myself in others. I like to see a student finally "get" how a problem works and feel like their work paid off. It is exceptionally fun when students have novel perspectives and ideas, because this means I learn something new every time as well.
I have a degree in biology. I also have a natural ability to impart information onto people in a way that is concise, memorable, and understandable. Most of my friends and family know and appreciate that being around me is a learning experience. I think we each have somthing to learn, and to teach, from everyone we meet.
