About Michael
Michael Lortan, a USGTF Golf Teaching Professional, is passionate about helping golfers of all levels—beginner to advanced—improve their game. Offering personalized lessons to develop skills from tee to green, all sessions are held at Coyote Ridge Golf Club in Carrollton.
Most golfers overcomplicate the game by self-diagnosing swing issues, relying on untrained advice, or mimicking pros they see on TV and social media—often worsening their performance.
My goal is to create a framework of 5 key principles to help golfers build their skills:
1. Master a Pre-Shot Routine: Focus on setup, aim, and alignment fundamentals.
2. Simplify Swing Basics: Understand the movements needed for a consistent swing.
3. Trust the Process: Learn to focus thoughts and avoid overthinking during the swing.
4. Strengthen the Mental Game: Make smarter decisions by understanding course odds.
5. Prioritize Quality Practice: Emphasize process over outcome with patience and purpose.
While they acknowledge the mental side of golf, many still approach the game like professionals, leading to poor decision-making. Nearly every new student cites "consistency" as their goal.
For the new or rookie golfer, a simple core of fundamentals, and a logical progression through the movements required to play, establishes the platform on which to rapidly develop the basic skills and etiquette to progress onto the course, and into group play.
I started teaching my wife to play many years back, and she became an 8 index golfer in her late forties. Since we managed to stay married through this 😎, a number of our friends started asking for advice, and then lessons. And as word spread to acquaintances and beyond, I formalized the process by qualifying as a Teaching Pro, and going into teaching fulltime.
USGTF Certified Golf Instructor
I am an avid student of the game, constantly reading books by the best teachers, as well as any other approach that will enhance my ability to address and improve weaknesses in a golfers game. I have studied extensively from McLean through to Leadbetter, Pelz to Stockton, Rotella and Alred. There are so many facets to golf from putting through to driving, but also course management and the mental approach, that if you are not continually evolving as a teacher, you start to lose effectiveness.
Master Teacher Certification in progress, to be completed early 2021

I typically have a phone consultation to discuss goals and understanding of issues. It's an opportunity to share my teaching philosophy and methodologies, and for you to gauge if we'll be the right fit.
I can also evaluate your golf swing from a video prior to lessons.
Lessons are of 60 minutes duration.
A large percentage of my work is with beginners and intermediate golfers. They offer the biggest challenges but their improvement is very rewarding. I work with a number of advanced and skilled golfers as well, and this is mostly fine tuning or resetting. Almost 20% of my students are female, from young kids through to seniors.
I believe that teaching is a passion and not a job. Passion manifests itself through patience and a commitment to making people become better golfers. Teaching requires flexibility and adaptability, because golf is a challenging sport, and no one process fits all.
I have two, and they illustrate the diversity of golf.
I am currently teaching two beginner groups - the one is a Mom and her 5yo daughter, and the other is a couple in their 80's.
Both groups have taken up golf to have an outdoor activity during the covid restrictions, and are having fun learning a new sport together.
I am also in the process of developing and testing four golf related accessories. I am always looking at ways to make golf logistics easier and these items will help the golfer to concentrate on the game rather than letting small things distract them. I have been working on these projects for about 5 months now, and am awaiting Patent Pending status for two of them. Very soon they will be available for purchase on the website.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Golf is a complex sport, with many facets comprising the game. It starts with fundamentals and set-up, then putting, chipping, bunkers, pitching, intermediate to full swings and finally to driver. The challenges facing beginners through to skilled golfers are similar, yet require very different approaches.
Does my prospective teacher have the skills to address all these areas relative to my skill level. And then help me to take the range work to the course, as well as improve my decision making and course management so as to best optimize those new skills?
2. How committed will I be to developing the new skills I am taught by spending time on the range?

Perfect! Michael was awesome. I was open to the idea of change, and he gave me a few subtle things to work on but they are starting to make a huge difference after putting in the work. Can’t wait for my next lesson.

Michael was exactly what I was looking for in a golf instructor starting off. Not just telling me what I should be doing, but also giving individualized feedback based on what I’m feeling in my swing. Went out and had a couple of my best rounds ever after working with him. Very relatable and easy to talk to as well.

Great instructor !!! Will FOR SURE have more lessons !!!!
Gave golf lessons to my Son for his birthday, Micheal was absolutely wonderful instructor. My Son said he really took his time and explains things well!
Lortan is not only an amazing trainer but an all around class act person. Lortan has taken the time to show me the fundamentals of the game in a short period of time and has helped make the game more enjoyable for me. He takes the time to explain not only the proper techniques but also the underlying issues that are causing short falls in my game. I plan on continuing to use Lortan and his expertise in the future.
I wholeheartedly recommend Lortan Golf as we’ve had a great experience working with Michael. I was looking for an activity I could enjoy with the kids and we signed up for a group class with Michael. We are beginners to golf and he has made this a truly enjoyable experience for all of us. Michael is extremely knowledgeable, provides great insight and feedback, and is absolutely great with the kids. We find ourselves talking about golf all the time, and are always looking forward to our weekend lessons.
Great teacher. Loves the game. Very patient. Would highly recommend.

Mike was excellent! Really helped and and listened to my needs.
I've only been taking lessons with Michael for a short period of time, but I'm already seeing real improvement in my game. He's identified things I didn't know I was doing and the deliberate progression through which we're working on things is making a difference. After we go through something he makes sure to recap the key points, which is helping my retention. I highly recommend Michael.
Michael is great! He is very fun to work with and made the skills very easy to learn and understand. I really liked his methodology and approach to the game! I was a very inexperienced golfer but just after one lesson, I already feel that my putting and chipping has improved tremendously. Highly recommend and I look forward to our next lesson! Thanks Michael!
Michael Lortan has a very thoughtful approach to teaching golf. Whether you're just getting started, or you've been playing for years, he knows how to meet you where you're at, and help you improve in all areas of the game. It's clear that he is extremely passionate about teaching and helping others with their golf game. Will definitely work with him again!
Michael did an excellent job of identifying the issues in my swing and giving me advice on how to correct these issues. He is very passionate about teaching and cares for his students. If your swing needs some work, he can help.
Michael is an excellent teacher/coach. He patiently works with you to determine the best swing for your level of athleticism and ability. He does not try and fit your swing into a cookie cutter style. Very personable and very professional. I highly recommend!!
Michael has been great for improving my self made game. Playing for 10+ years without any coaching, and within the first lesson i'm taking away advice that will change the way I play from here on.
Michael is an exceptional instructor! Very patient and thorough. I cannot recommend him enough as he made learning so enjoyable and less intimidating. Will definitely be taking more lessons with him!!!
I truly enjoyed my golf lessons with Michael. He is patient, kind, and a wonderful teacher. Thank you Michael!!!!
My first golf lesson with Michael was a fun and enjoyable experience. He takes the time to make sure you understand the concept and how it can affect your game before moving onto the next bit. He is methodical in his teaching and truly enjoys what he does. I'm looking forward to my next lesson with Michael.
I just recently made a decision to take lessons and had my first lesson with Michael yesterday. He has already made an immediate impact on my game. He was very patient with me and explained what he saw in my swing with video and his own eyes. I actually saw my ball fly in the air and straighter a lot more consistently that I was before. I am really looking forward to our upcoming lessons!
He really wants you to learn. He breaks down the techniques step by step so that you can learn and understand. Always goes that extra mile (more like extra 10 miles). Such a gentleman, amazing personality, professionalism and teacher skills. I was a zero in golf and in just 3 classes I am at a point where I would’ve never imagined I could reach in such a short time.
Michael has been an excellent teacher, looking forward to coming back later in my golf career for more lessons so I can keep bettering myself on the course.
Very knowledgeable, very patient. He was able to break down my weaknesses and strengths very quickly and find a solution that he explained very thoroughly to me. I was able to see improvements right away. Can’t wait for our next appointment.
Lortan golf worked with me on chipping first because that was my biggest opportunity to work on. I shaved off several strokes each round after that! They also spent about 1 hour on driving the ball with better accuracy, worked with ease, can’t thank them enough and has made golf much more rewarding.🏌️
\I was completely new to golf but had played sports. I thought golf would be easier than other sports but I learned quickly golf is not like that. Michael taught me all the basics as well as those creative shots you need for getting out of trouble. Today I love golf so much and am a 9.3 index. Michael was my only instructor. He is very good at communicating the “why” shots aren’t working and helping you correct the underlying reasons we pull, hook, slice or fade unintentionally. He is tenacious and if you love to learn you will get your game right with him. Super affordable too.
