About Timothy
My formal training in music started on the cello and trumpet when the school music programs became available. Shortly after at the age of twelve, I picked up my father’s guitar. My father was an incredibly talented bassist and later on I would be fortunate to perform with him for over a decade.
The timing could not have been better. 1991 was in my opinion, the greatest year for a twelve year old to pick up the instrument. I quickly excelled in both school and extracurricular music programs. The music program in Victor, NY boasts a very competitive field band program, so I’m not a stranger to the attitude of, “That was perfect…do it five more times…” I started teaching guitar part time out of my home while I was still in high school. I certainly gained experience, but I don’t really consider that part of my professional experience. In addition to teaching privately, I’ve also been an instructor at two local music stores. The first of which I was at for 14 years, leaving only for relocation.
From 2015-2019, I had an incredible amount of good fortune to have played with a local singer named Danielle Ponder. As a band, we quickly rose in popularity locally, then started traveling regionally. In both 2016 and 2018, we toured in several countries in Europe, the latter tour being 1 month in duration. What an absolute dream come true. I use this as a perfect example to my students: Work hard at something you love, and you’ll experience things and places that you never would have otherwise.
As I think with most good teachers, I was inspired by fantastic mentors that instilled in me a tremendous appreciation for the value of hard work and practice. At the same time, I was cutting my teeth on amps and effects pedals with my buddies, so I like to think I got the best of both worlds.
My overall philosophy I think is very much in line with yours: Anyone can play music. As the famous Bob Ross quote goes, “Talent is a pursued interest…”
I think it is important that my guitar students learn to read both notation and tablature in tandem as I did.
Not having any real piano training, I tend to stay very close to the book. But certainly if a child shows interest in something different, I wouldn’t have any trouble navigating it.
One of my biggest pet peeves are “guitar teachers” that scribble a few blues riffs at a kid and show them a pentatonic box, so music theory is huge for me. ALL of my students are given a healthy dose of “why” and how basic music theory is used to easily analyze music for the simplification of playing it. In other words, don’t think of “C, E, and G” as separate notes, but look at it as an arpeggio. That’s a super simplified example, but you get the idea. The problem I initially had was, when you LEARN how to read music on a monophonic instrument, it makes life a little difficult when handed a piano chart or complicated guitar piece. I used theory as a way to adapt, so that has spilled over to my teaching in many ways.
I believe that it’s important to teach a child that a good practice ethic is a skill that will apply to anything in life that they pursue, not just in learning a musical instrument. Just as my teachers did.
