About Edison
I have been working with students of all ages (ranging from 7 to 60) for the past 7 years and has developed an incredible amount of patience and angles of approach. I understand that everyone is unique and needs a different method of learning. My promise is to find the best route for each individual student and to offer premium instruction in reaching their desired goals.
Throughout the first half of my undergraduate studies, I focused on retaining a solid understanding of both music and education while also developing my abilities as a guitarist. I did not consider teaching a single student until I felt confident that I could provide a clear and efficient experience that would be worth one's time and money. Two years into my studies, I gained my first student, a complete beginner at the time who has recently given an hour-long recital for her family and friends. Since then, I found several other students and feel that I learn from them as much as they learn from me.
I currently hold a bachelor's degree from the New Jersey City University and am now pursuing my master's degree at the New England Conservatory of Music. I been working with students of all ages (ranging from 7 to 60) for the past 5 years and has developed an incredible amount of patience and angles of approach. I want to get as much musical information about you as possible. We would speak about long term/short term goals, past experiences, and, if capable, I would listen to how you play your instrument. It is very important to best know how I can fit in your musical journey. I work with each student differently and will ultimately come up with a method that best works for you.
I have worked with kids as young as 7, teenagers looking for a new hobby, adults with full-time jobs, and even those with mental disabilities.
Make sure you get to know the person you're hiring and get a sense of the kind of person they are. Talk to them and ask what they can do for you in the future. Are they understanding of your goals? Are they going to see you as an ambitious learner or as another paycheck? If you've had your first lesson, did it feel rushed near the end? Are lessons always stopped at the exact minute? Is the teacher constantly looking at the time in the middle of the lesson? Assuming the class is for your child, it may be a good idea to sit in on the lessons to see how certain situations are handled.
As of mid-2019, I have been in collaboration with an animator, illustrator, and designer in creating a short storyboard that lines up with a classical guitar recording. I am particularly fond of this project because it pushes creativity to a new level. By speaking with the visual artist directly, she can suggest musical ideas for me and I can suggest artistic ideas for her, creating a unique story based on a musical composition. This idea strengthens connections between classical guitar and other forms of art.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is this teacher formally or self-taught? There is nothing wrong with learning things without a mentor or teacher, but flaws/holes in the knowledge gained will be inevitable. How long has he/she been teaching for? Experience plays a factor in the quality of lessons. Although little experience does not guarantee bad quality and vise verse, it is a good idea to get an idea of what the teacher's history is like. How does he/she play? Although a good player does not always make for a good teacher, (conversely, a good teacher does not always make for a good player) if you are expecting to learn from someone, that person should have a good idea on how to play the given instrument. Does he/she have a website you can visit? Looking for the right teacher can be difficult. One step towards making that search easier is looking through a person's website to see who they are and what they can offer. Of course, this is only a general overview and the best way to gain this knowledge is by speaking to them.
