About Jeremy
Music is a highly subjective and deeply personal endeavor. My aim is to help each of my students to be able to express their musical creativity and find their own voice on the guitar or bass. As my student you will receive personalized lessons based on your current knowledge base and your own goals rather than being taught from a strict, generalized curriculum. Aside from just teaching you how to play certain songs or how to use certain techniques, I am also happy to give advice to help you find the right gear to use and to help you get the most out of what you have. As a professional gigging and recording musician, I understand how crucial it is to have the right guitar, amp, or pedal set up for you. Everybody is different, and my job is to help you accomplish your musical aspirations, whatever they may be.
My favorite part about teaching guitar is seeing students learn new things, discover new music, and begin to enjoy playing guitar just as much as I do. When practicing a certain lick finally pays off and a student can incorporate it into a solo, or when a new concept finally clicks in their head, that's just one more step towards that student achieving their musical goals.
I first started teaching as a favor for a family friend whose daugher was interested in learning guitar. I hadn't taught before that, but I told them I was happy to share what I knew, and it I found out that I really enjoyed it, and that my student was able to learn quite a lot. I've been teaching ever since, learning from other teachers I know and developing a system that I would love to have had when I was first learning.
I have been a musician, for most of my life. I studied the trumpet (orchestra and jazz) as a child starting from age 10, and I transitioned to the guitar and bass guitar when I was 17. In the two years since graduating from Howard University, I have been playing shows with bands and artists and recording professionally all over the DMV (Maryland, DC, and Virgina metro area), as well as in Atlanta and California. Venues where I have performed include The Howard Theatre, Pearl Street Wearhouse, and multiple Smothsonian museums. In addition to performing and recording, I have experience teaching elementary and middle school aged kids all the way up to adults, in both private lessons and group settings.

I begin by asking the student a few questions to assess the student's knowledge base and skill level, musical interestes and inspiriations, and goals and aspirations. I allow them to ask me some questions as well. This is all to determine whether I'd be a good fit to help teach that student what they want to learn. Each lesson is personalized to each student, so we may begin with the basic anatomy of the guitar and how it works, or we may begin with learning chords, or a certain scale or tecnique that would be helpful, or anywhere in between, depening on the skill level of the student.
As I stated above, I've worked with elementary and middle school aged kids all the way up to adults, in both private lessons and group settings.
I would make sure you like the way your teacher actually plays. If you they're not somebody you'd want to listen to or go see at a show, I probably woulnd't recommend taking lessons from them.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask yourself what your goals are musically. Do you want to become proficient enough to write songs? Do you want to expend your current knowledge into a different genre? Do you just want to be able to play what you hear from your favorite artists on the radio? Do you want to be a professional musician some day? Knowing the answer to that question will help you find the right teacher.
