About Monty
I've had a passion for music ever since I was a youngster and started playing when I was 12. I have a great ear and excellent relative pitch which has always been very helpful and has guided my playing. I'm very easygoing and teach well because I can put myself in the student's place and get a sense of what they need in order to get where they want to go, musically speaking.
I've been playing guitar since I was 12, and electric bass since I was 13 and am conversant in all styles, from popular, rock, blues, r&b, gospel, reggae, jazz, country, Broadway show tunes, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and 2000 through the present, including rap & hip hop.
I can teach either using music or by ear, as well as by focusing on the tunes the student would most like to learn and master. I also teach music theory, including the cycle of 5ths and how to use jazz substitutions and extensions.
I've been gigging since I was 14 and still play music gigs & open mics regularly.
