About
I have a bachelor's Degree in Psychology, from UCSC (1974); however, I had written and performed an hour of original guitar songs, before completing my degree.
In 1987, I began teaching piano for ten years through the Los Angeles Unified School District, and privately in the students’ homes. In 1996, after being a regular substitute school teacher for three years, I began teaching piano and guitar at a Los Angeles Parks and Recreation facility and privately in students’ homes. During those twenty years, I taught an average of 45 students weekly.
I have taught over a thousand students during those thirty years.
In 2017 I began teaching guitar and piano in Tupelo, MS. I teach most students in my home music studio.
I teach according to the needs of each student. Music reading is taught; however, my emphasis is on teaching how to play. Piano students play three-note chords, with their left hand and melody with the right hand, during their first lesson. Guitar students begin with a guitar boogie, using four chords, picking single and double strings, and strumming. A variety of styles are taught on both instruments and at an accelerated rate. Within a few months, students are intermediate players, if they practice! On guitar, I teach finger pickling and lead picking for blues and jazz. The students also learn jazz chord progressions.
