About Lara
Honoured as a "one of Canada's most acclaimed vocalists (−Hot House Jazz Guide, New York, Spotlight section), as a "world class jazz singer" (−All About Jazz), with "outstanding musicianship" and "superb vocal technique" (−Jazz History Online), Toronto-born, Brooklyn-based vocalist, composer and educator Lara Solnicki enjoys a versatile career with #1 songs on Canadian jazz radio and web charts (Radio Canada, CBC), garnering rave reviews from four continents. She is the recipient of numerous CD recording, composition, international residency and professional development grants and awards from The Canada Council for the Arts, The Chalmers Foundation, The Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council and FACTOR.
A classically trained singer with a four octave range, Lara originally intended a career in opera, receiving a BA from The Glenn Gould School/ Royal Conservatory of Music where she studied in both the Performance Diploma and Artist Diploma programs. She has taught lessons and master classes at several colleges and universities, at many of Toronto's most reputable private schools as well as privately. Lessons include preparations for competitive university and performing arts school auditions. A Royal Conservatory of Music (official Canadian classical examinations) affiliate instructor, Lara was a member of the classical teachers' organization ORMTA from 2006-2014, requiring that a minimum of 6 students receive a mark of 80% or above in a classical exam, in order to simply join the organization.
