About Jessi
I am a tenured University Spanish linguistics professor, with a specialization in sociolinguistics and historical linguistics. I also have a background in anthropology and political science, so I can offer not only linguistic expertise, but also cultural insight. I have been teaching in and about Spanish for 23 years.
I love seeing somebody gain the ability to communicate with others who were once beyond their reach, or delving into new kinds of music that have become newly accessible to them through their new language skills. Teaching (and learning) a language is a joyful and challenging task!
I started teaching officially when I began my PhD program. It was a part of my training and then became my career.

I generally start by asking the student what their goals are. I then tailor a plan to help them work on those specific goals, such as communicating with family or coworkers, or improving their academic writing skills.
I have mostly worked with university students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. I also have some experience tutoring children at the middle school and high school levels.
