Confidence - Technique - Performance
I've been teaching privately, adjudicating vocal competitions and performing for 25+ years. I’m a long time member of National Association of Teachers of Singing. I’ve studied with well-respected Master teachers in Oregon, California, and Utah. I have degrees in Vocal Performance as well as Music Education K-12. I’ve toured in Europe and have sung with many groups such as the Utah Symphony, Oregon Youth Symphony, Mormon Youth Symphony, and Chorus as well as other chamber and touring groups. I’ver performed in, directed and produced many Musical Theatre productions as well performed as a soloist for small venues. I continue to study with my own vocal teacher and stay updated with professional training and current approaches to vocal pedagogy and performance skills. I teach the Bel Canto Method of classical singing, and with younger singers, I use the First Books series as well as other appropriate literature for beginning and intermediate singers. Depending on how students work and advance, we also delve into foreign languages (Italian, Latin, Spanish, German and French). As far as my teaching philosophy goes, I will do all that I can to assist my students in the development of their vocal knowledge and abilities, but it is ultimately the student who determines how much progress is made, directly due to how much time is spent in practicing the things that are taught during their lesson. What they put into their vocal studies will determine what they accomplish. Learning is their responsibility, and regular weekly lesson attendance and practice are necessary in order to achieve optimal results.
I absolutely love teaching. Helping students overcome personal doubts, allowing themselves to make mistakes and recover, and to watch those "ah-ha" moments turn into absolute beauty is a thrill for me. Students struggle, and they rise. From young singers to those getting back into the profession, there is so much to learn and relearn. Our instrument changes, and it's a gift to embrace that flexibility in order to become the best of ourselves at any given time. I love what I do. I enjoy my students, and each one is a gift to me.

Prior to our first lesson, I send the student a semester lesson/payment schedule along, a studio lessons contract and a letter outlying what to expect the first lesson or two! "I would like to hear you sing something for me! Feel free to choose something easy and fun: a hymn, a Christmas song, something you sang at a previous recital or concert…anything that you like to sing. You will have some initial instruction, and we will do a bit of placement review with music theory, vocal abilities, and ear training. You will receive a spiral bound practice journal and a few papers that we’ll review. We’ll discuss your goals, and get you into some vocal exercises and songs!".
Children, Teens, Adults! I've worked with beginners (ear training in matching pitch) through advanced students (preparing for opera company auditions and musical theater shows).
Find someone who knows what they are doing!! There are too many singers/performers who believe they have what it takes to teach singing.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask what degrees or affiliations they have with the area of professional teaching. (there's more to teaching singing than learning new songs all the time!). If you are singing musical theater, ask about proper belting. If you are singing classical, what school of teaching do they use? What materials are the comfortable using? If you want to study Rock/Pop, how will they help you achieve your goals? And are YOU willing to make the changes necessary to achieve them. What are your goals within the first year? Within five? Long term? Are you singing for pleasure or for profession? Are you comfortable practicing in front of others? (if not, you may slow your advancement considerably). Are you willing to sing at recitals, and go to auditons? (singing in front of others is key if you want to improve your singing).
