I take a diagnostic test and from it, I assess the students' position in the subject matter. Then I give them another test with my own questions so I can get a grasp of their understanding. Then I give them a detailed assessment of their strengths and weaknesses and tell them what areas we need to work on. While taking the test, I sit next to the students and I ask them to speak out their thoughts, so I know where they are going wrong and what conceptual misunderstandings they have. After these tests, I give them an approximate score that they can get on the real test and if that score is below their target score, then I suggest to them the approximate time they would need tutoring and the number of hours outside of tutoring they need to study. Then I give them a detailed study plan.
I have worked with low scoring students, medium scoring students, and high scoring students.
