About Thomas
Singing is a skill and a series of choices about the kinds of sounds you want to make. A voice lesson is a one-on-one session with a professional teacher where you develop that skill and explore the different kinds of sounds that you can create. There is no 'wrong' or 'bad' way to sing, but some choices are healthier and make more efficient use of your body.
We all come to lessons with different goals. My goal is to help you develop your skill and make healthier choices.
I grew up in a family of educators. My mom and dad both taught in elementary school for most of their careers, which meant I was always around teachers. 'Education' just runs through my veins. I love working with people from all backgrounds and skill levels and helping them realize and reach their potential.
I earned my BA Music Education in 2005 and received certification in choral, instrumental, and general music (pre-K through 12th grade). I completed my MA Vocal Pedagogy with the queen of pedagogy herself, Joan Wall, one of 20 prominent American vocal teachers featured in the book 'A Spectrum of Voices: Prominent American Vocal Teachers Discuss the Teaching of Singing.' In 2018, I'll begin my DMA Vocal Performance at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I've taught voice in Dallas and Chicago for 13 years, and conducted mixed and women's choirs at Holy Name Cathedral for 9 years. I've given talks on arts entrepreneurship and voice/vocal pedagogy, and judged singing competitions. I'm a member of the American Choral Directors Association and National Association of Teachers of Singing. I've studied voice for 17 years and I still take lessons because I know there's so much more to learn.

About the lesson

The first few lessons are always about getting acclimated to one another. Part of that is working on establishing a common vocabulary to talk about singing, hearing what you sound like throughout your whole voice, and testing out how integrate suggestions. After a few lessons, we begin integrating repertoire and music that you will find interesting and diving into technical work that will help you achieve your goals.

Standard Rates
These rates are for lessons in my home studio. They are for anyone that is not a college student or recent graduate of a university music program.
- $60 / 1-hour
- $50 / 45-minutes
- $40 / 30-minutes
Student/Graduate Rate
This rate is for current university students and for graduates of any university music program who are pursuing a music career. The rate is applicable for up to 1.5-years after the date of graduation, and I require proof of the graduation date.
- $40 / 1-hour
Travel Surcharge
I can travel to you for lessons, but you must secure a space and keyboard, and the space must be accessible by public transportation within Chicago. I also assess a surcharge in addition to the rates above.
