About Debra
I have been playing softball for over 4 decades and have spent thousands of hours of seeing in myself and others what works and what doesn't work. **Please note - I can coach everything EXCEPT PITCHING - I do not have enough experience with pitching to confidently give lessons. I have played consistently in leagues and tournaments both in the US and also in the United Kingdom while I lived there for over 7 years. I have coached both paid and unpaid part time for many years but never had the amount of time that I do now. My lessons are typically 1 hour and 15 min. I charge $40 per hour and 15 min. and nominal travel $ based on mileage if I come to you. Thereafter, it is $35 per lesson plus travel $. I follow up the lesson with a typed synopsis that I will email to the player so that no one has to worry about taking notes, etc. and just be present during the lesson. Most coaches charge $50 per 30 min w/out the follow up memo which includes videos and other exercises to work on while the student is at home. I do not charge for this part of the coaching even though it takes me at least 60 minutes to thoughtfully put that together. One hour and fifteen mintes may not seem like a lot of time but it is really plenty of time when working with just one student. I have my own pitching machine that can be used for fast pitch softball which makes for very effective batting practice. I have about 75 softballs and it's working out to be about 150 pitches per lesson (they aren't able to hit all fo the pitches but they can get most of them). That's a very good workout and a million times better than batting cages. I will give some "homework" using unique ways to support the player's muscle memory by doing drills that do not always require a softball or a field which the parents or a partner can do with them - none of which require softball skills. I do not have a one “size fits all “ approach and cater to their individual strengths and comfort level. I am interested in a long term coaching relationship and will keep accurate records so we can achieve this. I like to use technology such as videos so that the player can further conceptualize the skills. Achieving success requires being open to new ways to do achieve results. You can try a few tips and incorporate it into your game and then you will know if in a few weeks I have helped you. It's pretty straigtforward and I ask that you be open to trying the coaching during the lesson. What qualifies me is that I have played with Div 1 players that were also coaches and I coach the same way they do. I have helped hundreds of people improve their skills so just give it a chance at least before deciding it's not the right technique. I give the student a little bit of info at a time, I don't overload them with everything at once, that doesn't work and that is what is usually happening to them when they come to me. for the first time. Just becasue you point out an issue doesn't mean they will correct it immediately, that's not how it works in sports where it involves motor skills and brain functions. My students are hitting really well, but that is after a few lessons, not just one. Manage your expectations of both the student and myself as the coach because in many instances, this is part of the problem as to why they are not achieving their potential. Hitting requires putting together brain functions that involve quick decisions. The student needs to be relaxed in order to develop these skills. It is easier to do this with a coach simply because the pressure is just not there for them.
I love being able to help a frustrated player as much as I love softball and that is SAYING SOMETHING. The best feeling is when I hear about their SMILES after doing well in a game after conquering an issue. It's not about winning the game, it's about ENJOYING the game that you love so much by beng coached on some issues you would like to address and the satisfaction of progressing to the next level in your game.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Management/Marketing (with many Psychology courses) and I am one year in towards a Masters to become a Clinical Therapist. I have various Coaching and Umpire Certifications from the United Kingdom but do not have any from the US at the moment but I will begin these formal classes. The thousands of hours spent playing and watching softball games gives me ability to recognize what's needed to correct some issues. The formal education in psychology and therapist prep enables me to address the mental issues that affect the game and also enable me to communicate effectively with the student. The love and passion for the game is inherent and will always be a part of my life.

Prior to the first practice I will do a "diagnostic" interview to see what issues the student would like to work on and then ask some questions to gain more nformaiton on how to address the issues in the upcoming lesson. I will offer some techniques and skills after viewing what I think may support goals. They can use whichever ones they like, I have no 'set' strategy. They pick and choose and it's up to me to figure out another idea if something isn't working. I am the one with the decades of experience. They can go at their own pace and I am happy to let them dictate this.

Perfect! Debbie was really great in working with my 13 year old grand daughter. Good combo of instruction, videos and practice. Helped with skills and equipment recommendations. really helped Maggie with her approach and confidence, plus she's a nice person.
Bill CoxPerfect! From out first conversation I knew she was passionate about the sport. She didn’t try to sell me on group training or push doing multiple days a week to spend more money. She cares more about the coaching and less about money. A perfect combination. She’s a keeper.

$40 for the first lesson - 1 hour 15 min. in person price plus nominal travel $$ if needed. Thereafter, $35 per lesson plus nominl travel $ based on mileage. Some students do once a week, some do 2x or 3x per month. It is better to to do 2x per month over a three month period then 4 x in one month. They need time to incorporte the skills into their games during the week. I do not set the schedule, you tell me what works and we put together a loose schedule that can be modified due to games, etc. I understand that there are a lot of time commitments and I am very flexible. In a one on one session, one hour and 15 minutes is all you really need, any more time and they get too tired physically and will check out mentally. Prior to the first lesson, I will do a diagnostic telephone call to see what the student would like to do a lesson. At the end of each lesson the student will be given homework do practice these skills at home and will also receive a word document memo detailing what we covered. I am open to answering questions via telephone or email after the lesson as well. I am interested in long term relationships with the student, whatever works in terms of how much time they need in person/telephone/email can be worked out - I am very reasonable and easygoing about those things. I am most interested in the student and how they progress and there are going to be times when they need more contact while they are learning a skill, I don't want to "nickel and dime" charges to anyone over these things.
