About David
My goal as a violin teacher is to give a student the musical and technical advantages they need, using the most efficient methods, to achieve their musical goals be able to let the audience hear what is in the player's mind and soul. The benefit of taking lessons at my violin/viola private studio is that I teach classical violin - using the Suzuki repertoire for younger students, if desired - in addition to many alternative styles. These include: fiddle, Celtic, Blues, Rock, R & B, and World Music. I have been a violinist in the Eugene Symphony for 33 years and am also the violinist in the band The Sugar Beets, voted Eugene's Best Band numerous times. I also perform swing, bluegrass and jazz in other groups. I have a Bachelors Degree in Music Education, and have taught in district 4-J. I received a Performance Merit Scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I also make custom electric violins. What I enjoy most about teaching is showing or helping a student attain their goals, whatever they may be, and see their joy in learning a certain piece or technique. I believe that the basics of how to hold the bow and the violin, learning certain scales and how to improvise are tools for the player to use to transmit the music that is in their mind and heart to the audience listening, or for the player's own enjoyment. My favorite part of teaching is seeing and hearing a student understand concepts and play pieces that were previously aspirations, and to witness a student's joy in realizing that they can achieve success in what they might have thought was impossible. As a violinist myself, playing both symphonic music and in many other styles, it is my goal and happiness to guide and show my students how to play what they wish to. I am violinist in the Eugene Symphony, have played in The Mozart Players, The Eugene Ballet and opera orchestras, and have played on many recordings for other artists. I received a Performance Merit Scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and have performed in varying styles with nationally-known musicians. My goal is providing my students with what they need to have fun, a new level of self-confidence and joy in their performance of music.
