About Penelope
I began my journey with violin as a classical musician, learning to read music and play with a variety of ensembles such as string duos, trios and quartets as well as symphony orchestras, joining the PEI Symphony at the age of 13. I obtained my BA in Violin Performance at the Conservatoire de Musique de Quebec in 2000 and went on to perform and tour with several orchestras throughout Quebec and the Maritimes. I also completed intensive trainings with world class musicians at the National Arts Centre, the Orford Centre for the Arts and Domaine Forget International Music camps.
After a bout with tendinitis forced me to take a break from classical concerts, I began to explore other genres, joining rock bands, electronic pop groups, world music ensembles and more on stage, on tour, and in the recording studio. This experience helped me discover a true love of experimentation and improvisation, introducing me to the vast world of possibilities of the violin. Soon I began using accessories such as effect pedals, amps and loops in order to expand my musical world.
Since then, I have toured Canada, the United States and Europe with various groups, performed in major festivals and recorded on a number of professional albums in styles including classical, rock/pop, fiddle, hip hop, tzigane/gypsy, and klezmer.
In 2016 I returned to school in order to obtain my Mater's degree in Music Therapy, which also vastly expanded my perspective on music instruction to incorporate ideas on music and wellness.

I understand that everyone learns differently, so I work with your personal style and pace. I can help you learn to read music, but won't force it if you prefer to learn by ear (I learned both ways in the past). For beginners looking for structured lessons, I use methods such as Suzuki, Claude Letourneau and Pope. For those intermediate players looking to improvise and expand their sound, I use a more eclectic approach incorporating music technology (such as backing tracks, recording and listening) and spontaneous collaboration.
I believe that learning music should be fun!
