About Tom
After graduating from University with a BA (Hons) in Film & Video in 1997, I spent 12 years teaching vocational Media Production at Cornwall College, before deciding in 2010 to enter the industry. I started out as a videographer - mostly weddings and corporate - before picking up work as a cinematographer on several features.
I have since built a extensive portfolio, won a few festival gongs for my efforts - including as a trailer editor - and received an accolade from Roger Deakins stating that my work is “beautifully shot and immaculately put together”. To me, that is the equivalent of a Lifetime Achievement award!
I teach with passion, a wide breadth of knowledge, and a holistic, student-centred approach.

I teach primarily one-to-one and face-to-face, with some catch-up sessions online. All learning is ‘coursework-based’ - ie. towards a production goal, which can be decided on with the student.
Sessions can cover any or all stages of film production, from script-writing and storyboarding, through blocking and cinematography, to editing and grading. Initial practical sessions typically last two hours, with shorter supports sessions as the work progresses.
My lessons are for anyone aged 16+ who is looking to advance their skills, particularly to improve their portfolio for university applications, or to get a foothold in the industry. You will have the opportunity to operate a range of cameras and rigging equipment, and gain a unique insight into the grassroots industry.
Students should have good IT skills and, ideally, access to any software they would like to learn to use, though this is not essential.
