About Ensemble UGO
Rodrigo Maturana Foscolo – Klangdramatiker Italian-Argentine composer and playwright based in Berlin, specializing in contemporary music, instrumental theater, and opera. As a Klangdramatiker – a composer-playwright who conceives libretto and score as a single creative organism – he integrates sound, dramaturgy, and stage space, allowing music and stage to unfold simultaneously and creating a fully immersive operatic experience. His work as a dramaturge is influenced by Jorge Luis Borges, Vladimir Nabokov, Truman Capote, and Thomas Pynchon, creating narratives that are ironic, complex, and meticulously crafted in every narrative twist. His training began in Latin America, participating in new music festivals and absorbing influences from Flo Menezes’ maximalist approach. He later studied in Karlsruhe with Wolfgang Rihm and Helmut Lachenmann, deepening his understanding of structure, material, and theatrical expression. He directs Ensemble Ugo, focused on contemporary and experimental projects. His opera Il Sottile Delirium (2022) exemplifies his integrated approach. His second opera, An Intentionally Failed Tribute, will premiere in 2026, continuing his exploration of operatic form and the dramaturgy of sound from the perspective of a Klangdramatiker.

This course is aimed at students interested in deepening their compositional development through analysis and reflection on their own work as well as the work of other colleagues. The main pedagogical approach is to encourage critical listening of the works of other composers and classmates. This approach enhances a close and enriching dialogue, allowing each student to observe and understand the creative processes of those around them.
Throughout the course, students will work on identifying the aesthetics and compositional resources present in others' works, exploring how these influences shape their own musical language. Additionally, the course will promote reflection on the relationship between technique and personal artistic expression, helping students solidify a unique and coherent poetics in their work.
The course provides a space for mutual feedback, where participants can share their compositions and receive constructive feedback, contributing to the evolution of their compositional practice and the definition of their musical identity.

I have been taking these seminars for a few months, and I have already recommended some colleagues and students to take them. Most of them are about topics that have always been interesting to me, but I didn't know how to start merging all the information about these, or I didn't know how to start with them. I feel relaxed taking these seminars, but at the same time, I know I have to be very focused because there is a lot of information and details to learn.
I have learned not only about music and composition, but also about the way he conceives literature. He is really able to portray characters in a way that you feel you would find in literature, but at the same time, you understand that there are some elements of the characters that are described only with the score and the sound of instruments. I have learned to build my musical intuition using all these elements and to learn how to express, build, and organize all the ideas that I have.
