About Emem
My name is Emem. I've spent over 20 years in fashion — as a designer, a business owner, and now, an educator. I founded Dialect Atelier because I believe clothing should be made with intention, and Dialect Academy because I believe that knowledge shouldn't stay locked away with the people who have it.
I didn't come into fashion through a shortcut. I learned by doing — by making mistakes, by building a brand from nothing, by figuring out what actually works in a real studio and a real business, not just in theory. That's the kind of teacher I am: someone who's lived what I teach.
I teach because I remember what it felt like to not know where to start — and I remember how much it meant when someone took the time to actually show me, not just tell me. I want to be that person for my students.
I'm also deeply drawn to the stories behind fashion — especially African textile heritage. Fabrics like Ankara, Adire, and Aso-oke carry history, identity, and meaning. When I teach, I don't just want you to learn a stitch or a silhouette — I want you to understand why it matters, so your work has depth, not just technique.
Whatever brought you here — a hobby, a dream of starting your own label, a curiosity about fashion — I want to meet you where you are and help you grow from there. Teaching, to me, isn't just a job. It's how I pass on everything fashion has given me.

Why Learn With Me
Anyone can teach you to thread a needle. Not everyone can teach you how to turn that skill into a career.
I've spent over 20 years in the fashion industry — as a designer, a brand founder, and an educator. I built Dialect Atelier from the ground up into a bespoke-to-ready-to-wear brand, and I founded Dialect Academy to pass on everything I've learned the hard way, so my students don't have to.
Here's what makes lessons with me different:
Real industry experience, not just theory. I'm not teaching from a textbook — I'm teaching from two decades of actually running a fashion business, working with clients, and solving the problems that come up in real design and production.
I teach the craft and the business. Sewing and design are only half the picture. If you want to turn this into income, you need to understand pricing, sourcing, client relationships, and brand building — and I bring that into every lesson.
Depth most tutors don't have. My research into African textile history — Ankara, Adire, Aso-oke — means you're not just learning technique, you're learning the cultural weight and story behind the fabric. That context makes your work more original and more intentional.
