Faye - West Hampstead - Music Theory

Methodology

Music is one "language" that allows people to communicate, wherever they have come from in the world. I very much enjoy nurturing my students so they want to play and share their music.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I principally teach violin. However I also teach piano but limit my teaching to Grade 8 as it is not my principal instrument. Some parents like a consistent method of teaching and prefer both instruments to be taught by the same teacher, if possible, which I can provide. I also teach music theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Bachelor's Degree - BMus Hons - violin (London : Royal Academy of Music)
Teaching Licentiate - LRAM (Licentiate Royal Academy of Music)
ABRSM Grades - Grade 8 Distinction (violin)

- How much do you charge?

I charge £50 per hour for lessons (£30 for a half hour lesson) when teaching from my base in West Hampstead. If I travel to teach I charge an additional charge.
Consultation Lesson - It is important that you find the right teacher for you, in terms of teaching skills, motivation and personality. Also it is important for me as a teacher to find out what sparks your interest in music, to help plan the best approach to your lessons. I feel that this is best achieved in a "face to face" meeting which is why I suggest an initial consultation lesson to discuss what motivates you / the student to apply for lessons.

- Where do you teach?

I'm based in West Hampstead close to the West Hampstead stations (Jubilee, London Overground and Thameslink). I am prepared to travel from my flat to central and north London for an additional fee.

- When are you available?

Please email or call me to discuss possible lesson times.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach students of all ages from beginners to advanced.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I use the ABRSM exams as an aid to my teaching and to give my students a sense of achievement. I try to enter students into exams when they are at a playing level where they should be awarded a merit or distinction. I see no value to a student entering an exam prematurely and "scraping" a pass, especially when there are three sittings a year to choose from. Particularly with children and young adults, success in a music exam and the self esteem that flows from that can be the foundation of academic success in other subjects. I also prepare students for auditions and entrance exams.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Learning an instrument does require some hard work but should be fun as well in the right teaching atmosphere and normally is very rewarding. With most of my teachers I have enjoyed my lessons and they made me want to practice and I liked the feeling of being able to play well. From the age of 7, I used to travel all the way to London from Swindon to Royal Academy of Music's Saturday schools and even though I had been ill, off school all week, I somehow "recovered" by Saturday (which my dad used to tease me about) because I loved my lessons so much. I hope that all my students enjoy their lessons and progress.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching professionally for over 10 years. I have taught students of all ages and abilities and also been involved with coaching orchestras, chamber groups and choirs. Prior to that I taught and coached my siblings, relations and friends. (With my siblings we use to play as a piano violin quartet, which I coached).

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I am registered on the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly Criminal Records Bureau) national register and have an Enhanced Certificate working with children as private music teacher from Aug 2013.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I most recently studied for a Bachelor of Music (BMus) violin at the Royal Academy of Music under Professor Igor Petrushevski. I started playing the violin when I was just 6 years old with my first teacher Barbara Turpin who after a year suggested that I should audition for a scholarship from the Wiltshire Schools Music Service to allow me to attend one of the Saturday schools run by the music conservatoires in London. I was awarded a scholarship and successfully auditioned at the Primary Academy department of the Royal Academy of Music. At the Primary Academy I studied violin under Ellen Martin who guided me through to my successful audition to the Junior Academy for which I received a scholarship. In the Junior Academy I initially studied under Nina Martin and later Ben Wragg who coached me to being offered places at a number of the UK senior Conservatoires. I chose to continue to study at the Royal Academy of Music and was the only Junior Academy violinist to be offered a place that year in the Senior Academy.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My students vary from young children learning to play for the first time to older students who want to experience a level of teaching that I can give from my time studying with an internationally renown professor at the Royal Academy of Music. Some of my students are studying other subjects whilst they are in London and enjoy the chance of taking up their music studies again. Although parents may arrange for me to initially teach one of their children, I sometimes find I am asked to teach other members of the family including one of the parents. Teaching more than one student can be useful if attention spans are short as is teaching more than one instrument or theory.
