About Joanna
I am a violin tutor with 5 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in ethnomusicology. I have taught over 170 students and I have a performing background in Irish traditional music that includes regular sessions, a recorded album with a traditional ensemble, and several festival appearances including an invitation to play at a major Irish trad festival. I have also completed a residency studying Scottish fiddle with a master fiddler in Shetland, and this direct apprenticeship experience informs how I think about the transmission of traditional music and how I structure the learning process for my students.

My violin teaching specialises in folk and traditional fiddle styles across British, Irish, Scottish, and American traditions, and I teach these traditions as complete and sophisticated musical systems rather than as simplified introductions to classical violin. I begin students without using written notation because all of these traditions were transmitted orally for generations and learning by ear is not just a historical curiosity — it produces faster learning, more idiomatic phrasing, and a better musical memory than notation-based learning in folk contexts. Bowing is the primary technical vehicle in fiddle styles — the characteristic bowing patterns of Irish reels, the lift of a Scottish strathspey, the drive of an old-time fiddle tune, and the lyricism of a slow air are all produced by specific and distinct bowing choices, and I teach these as central technical competencies. Ornamentation — cuts, rolls, crans, trebles in Irish tradition; gracenotes and birls in Scottish tradition — is treated as an essential part of the music rather than an advanced addition. Rhythm and groove — the underlying feel that makes a reel dance or a ballad sing — is addressed explicitly through body movement alongside playing. Session culture — the etiquette, expectations, and repertoire conventions of the folk session pub setting — is taught as part of the curriculum because many students want to join sessions and the social conventions of these settings are as important as the musical ones. I introduce students to the major recordings in each tradition as a learning resource. My teaching goal is a fiddler who can walk into a session anywhere in Ireland or Scotland and feel genuinely at home.
