About Riley

I have a degree from the University of Calgary in Film Studies. This has given me plenty of opportunities to write essays, read academic literature, and refine my abilities to analyze literature and visual art. I have plenty of experience instructing youth programs as well as proofreading and editing work of other students and professionals who want their written work to look clean, concise, and eloquent.

I would consider myself to be a lifelong learner. Curiosity is what drives us to expand our knowledge and gain new experiences. I encourage my student to carry curiosity and enthusiasm for learning throughout their whole life.

A typical lesson plan for me would begin with some small talk and warm-up exercises. As we dive into the material, I continuously ask my student questions about their current understanding so I can best empathize with their concerns or difficulties with the given topics. From there, we look at examples from real-life contexts to see how the concepts are applied. This helps give the student an understanding of why the lesson matters outside of school.

I find it is best to dive into material by starting out in very general terms. For instance, when discussing The Great Gatsby, I would begin by talking about the 1920's and the great depression for context. For Algebra, I would begin by explaining variables in terms that are not so abstract that the student can't proper visualize them. I also tend to draw on my wide range of interests and hobbies to help make connections with my students. This helps me to use outside references (such as sports, gaming, and pop culture) to help explain concepts that are difficult to grasp.

Then, as we complete any exercises, I slowly back off from giving so much help, allowing the student to begin to feel the confidence of completing their own work independently. Finally, I believe it is of utmost importance to reflect on the lesson by asking the student "what did you learn today?", "are you feeling more confident with these topics?", and "do you have any questions for me?"

I always want my students to leave our sessions having learnt something. One can not become an expert at a given subject overnight, but they can end each day on a high note and return the next day excited to keep progressing!
