About Calum
Currently completing my final year at UCL Medical School, I am enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring as demonstrated by my consistent contribution to this over the past 5 years. Some of these roles have included mentoring pre-medicine applicants from under-represented London schools through the application process, designing and leading a series of lectures for first year students and mentoring new students through their first term at university. My varied experiences have allowed me to become accustomed to the common difficulties encountered by students at different stages in their studies and develop strategies to help overcome these.
My educational achievements include ranking joint 8th out of 458 students in the National Duke Elder examination in Ophthalmology 2019 and in the top 20% over my two completed clinical years at medical school. I have a first-class BSc in Physiology and have been nominated for an award from the UCL Cancer institute for a presentation on prostate cancer. My A-levels include A grades in A2 Maths, Chemistry and Biology and in AS History.

I am methodological in my approach, researching evidence-based teaching techniques and adapting them to my own lessons. I believe this approach has been successful in sustaining an active learning experience and nurturing confidence in my students. This is exemplified in the words of one of my mentees who thanked me for ‘building the confidence needed to achieve [her] goals’ in the process leading to her successful application to medical school, which remains my proudest teaching moment.
