Tl;dr association > memorization.
Longer version: For me, the most effective way to learn a new language is through regular exposure. I believe in learning a new language similar to how one learned their first language, by associating words or phrases with their real world meanings. Rather than memorizing lists of words or running grammar drills, my goal is to train the brain to make the association between what is being said, and what the words are meant to represent.
