During my time as a language tutor I used a wide variety of teaching styles depending on what I was trying to achieve during that particular lesson. I have a very hands-on style and always strive to make use of innovative techniques.
However, my main approach is very student centred and I enjoy utilising a exploratory style which involves promoting learning through interaction, asking lots of stimulating questions to make sure the student has understood the topic and asking them to create their own questions of what they would like to further investigate about the topic. I would also encourage the students to explore under researched areas or unanswered questions about a topic, so that they can deepen their understanding, expand their overall knowledge of the subject and create new ideas and perspectives about various aspects of psychology. I feel that this approach encourages self discovery, promotes problem solving skills, critical thinking and cultivates curiosity.
I also engage in task based teaching which allows me to be creative in assigning relevant tasks that would assist in consolidating the student's knowledge of the subject, as well as trying to get them to visualise how whatever they are learning could be applied in a real life setting.
Overall, I am very flexible, informal and patient in my teaching approach and am very able and willing to tailor a lesson to the individual needs of the student.
I studied my teaching qualification, which was teaching a foreign language in the lifelong sector, at City Lit College, Holborn, in 2013. I studied my bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the university of East London from September 2015 to June 2018 and I obtained a first class honours degree.
I studied a wide range of topics such as the Psychology of addiction, mindfulness, critical thinking, anomalous psychology, moral psychology, advanced statistics and cognitive neuro-psychology, just to name a few. My third year dissertation was based on how mindfulness can potentially increase our overall resilience. I will also be completing a Masters of Research in Psychology at the university of Goldsmiths as I consider myself a life long learner of this fascinating subject.
I am new to to tutoring psychology and am extremely excited to have the privilege to and my three years as a language tutor have definitely given me very transferable skills which I fervently believe will prove valuable to tutoring psychology. I’ve tutored the Twi language, native to Ghana, from beginner to advanced level and and thoroughly enjoyed the process of teaching something new to individuals and seeing them progress and reach their desired goals.
I want to be a tutor to share my passion for psychology and inspire others who are interested in this topic to advance their knowledge and succeed in accomplishing their learning aspirations whilst expanding their comprehension of the human condition.
