About Anupam

I have been teaching and tutoring Mathematics for more than twenty years, working with students across the UK, Europe and the Middle East. I retired as Head of Mathematics at St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School in Langley in 2019, and now tutor full-time, alongside continuing work as an examiner and assessor for Edexcel (UK and International), AQA, OCR and Cambridge International - at GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level and International A-Level.

My specialisms are the UK GCSE and A-Level (including Further Mathematics), the Edexcel International A-Level and IGCSE, Cambridge International, and the IB Diploma — and I am particularly experienced with internationally mobile families who want British-curriculum tuition wherever they happen to be living. I tutor online worldwide and in person at my home in Warfield, Berkshire.

What my students tell me they value most is that I know each curriculum from the inside, including how it is examined. The Edexcel International A-Level rewards a different intellectual habit from the IB Diploma; my job is to know the difference and translate it into a learning programme that fits the student in front of me.

Recent students include a young woman whose A grade firmed her place at Oxford (mechanics, formerly her weakest paper, became her strongest), a Year 11 student lifted from grade 4 to grade 7 in weeks, and a sustained record of grade 8 and 9 outcomes at GCSE and IGCSE.
Before teaching, I had a different career: a decade as a senior executive at LIC of India, then after my move to the UK in 1996, retraining in IT and roles at a London software house and at HSBC Asset Management. I left in 2004 to qualify as a teacher.

I hold an MSc in Mathematics, a PGCE, QTS, an Enhanced DBS, and long-standing membership of British Mensa.

Every student I work with gets a programme built around their syllabus, their level, and their specific goals — there is no off-the-shelf approach.

For KS3 and lower GCSE students (Years 7 to 10), lessons usually run for an hour. For Year 11 students and all of A-Level, I recommend 90 minutes. The longer format matters at exam level: an hour does not leave enough time for a proper review of the previous week's work, a substantive new section, and a meaningful close. That said, the choice is the family's — I am happy to tutor exam-year students in 60-minute sessions if that suits their schedule or budget better.

A typical lesson begins by reviewing whatever has been set since we last met — not to mark it, but to understand where the student got stuck, and why. From there we work through new material together: I explain a concept, ask the student to apply it in a few questions, and we discuss the reasoning at each step. I do not give answers students could work out themselves — I expect them to think — but I am patient with the process, and never make a student feel stupid for not seeing something immediately. Lessons end with a clear set of work for next time, and a note on what we will cover.

Between lessons, I am available by email for short questions on specific problems. I do not charge for these — they are part of the relationship.

What makes my approach different from most tutoring you will find: I do not skip to past papers. Almost every student who comes to me has been drilled on past papers by a previous tutor without first understanding the underlying concepts. The grades that come from that approach plateau quickly. I take the slower route — secure the foundations, build fluency, then introduce exam technique — and the grades go further as a result.

The other thing I bring that few tutors can: current examiner experience for Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Cambridge International. I know how each board's papers are marked, where candidates lose marks, and how to convert understanding into a strong grade in the room.
