About Ray

I am a semi-retired teacher, lecturer and journalist, who has stayed relevant through my weekly column in a leading national newspaper.
I am working, currently, three days a week at a secondary school, however I would prefer to be teaching single students, including those with special education needs, as I have fewer distractions 1-2-1.
Having set, and marked exams, in higher education, I believe I can upskill any student in exam preparation, being aware of marking schemes and marker 'signposts.'
I am older... but wiser, and not so old that I see barriers between myself and my learners.

English

I have always taught 55 minute lessons, leaving the last few minutes for those queries and questions students often forget.
My methodology is hybrid, featuring clear identification of lesson objectives, and a teacher-centred introduction. However, each lesson then becomes student-centred, with enquiry-based elements. It is important to me that in all subjects, it is what the student thinks, that matters. I also favour project-based assignments, aka homework, to allow my students space, and to demonstrate their 'care factor' and commitment.
I have been a university lecturer for eight years, a teacher for four years, an instructor for six years, and an SEN team member for four years, and taught English as a second language, in the Middle East, and Kazakhstan.
I can teach most ages, but have proven extremely effective with GCSE and beyond learners.
