About Catherine
Since graduating with a First from Cambridge University in Sociology, I have spent three years teaching students one-to-one and in small groups.
I first worked in a secondary school as an academic mentor for Y7-10 students reading below their age average. I also trained as a Phonics Fresh Start Tutor during this time. I have now worked for two years teaching English and creative writing to adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.
Alongside this professional experience I have volunteered as a tutor with Zero Gravity, helping students with their university applications. Several of my tutees have already been successful in getting offers from Cambridge University.
I am planning to start a PGCE this September.

For SEN students, I take a personalised approach and draw on my wealth of experience following SEN teaching methods. I am Fresh Start Phonics trained but prefer to follow students' own interests when picking reading resources as I find most students find this more engaging.
I understand the importance of using physical and visual props to support learning. For instance, I will often use storyboarding as a sequencing task for students attempting to write their own work or access texts on the curriculum. I pride myself on taking a creative approach to engaging students in accessing a new topic or building foundational skills.
I like to focus my sessions around solving a concrete problem or producing something creative. For instance, in my current role as a sessional leader for SEN students I focused one term around producing memoirs. I encouraged students to bring in pictures of themselves when they were younger and we practised asking and answering questions about ourselves. Students then expanded from this to being able to make stylistic choices to be able to write a story from their lives emotively.
I am really passionate about working with SEN students and find that the most fun and inventive lessons I plan are usually those that push me to work creatively and outside of standard classroom teaching methods, which many find difficult to engage with.

Catherine helped me so much! She was always very clear and thorough. My confidence (and grades) wouldn't be where they are today without her !
Cat is a patient, kind and clever educator. She managed to graduate with a First from the University of Cambridge and her experience teaching in schools and inclusive education settings makes her a tutor with valuable and diverse experiences.
Besides it all, she is really funny and I think that's important in the stress-induced environment that education sadly is these days.View more recommendations
