I take pride in assessing students' needs and preferences carefully, both before our first session and at regular intervals thereafter, and tailoring my approach based on this. My students come to language learning from a wide range of academic backgrounds, with a wide range of preferences based on those backgrounds as well as on their learning goals and their own personalities. Understanding these factors helps me to create bespoke sessions for each student, and regularly checking in to make sure my students are getting what they need from both content and delivery helps me to tweak my approach as we go along.
That said, I am also a CELTA-qualified Teacher of English as a Foreign Language which has equipped me with skills in Communicative Language Teaching - simply put, that's the idea that you learn a language best by using it! If a student wants a completely CLT lesson, I will use French only, and match the level of language I use with their understanding. I'll limit my talking time to equipping them concisely with the tools they need to speak (or write), prompting/supporting them in using those tools in progressively more challenging ways, and offering feedback. I've taught classes and individual lessons using variations on this method for students of all levels, from complete beginners upwards: there's no doubt that it works very well in some form for lots of people but the main thing it has taught me is to work with my students' needs and abilities - they always come before any named methodology.
I have been tutoring French since finishing my BA in 2004. Since then, I have worked with a wide range of students from Primary School children learning French for the very first time, to those sitting UK Secondary school exams, to adults looking to learn for business purposes or to relocate.
