I emphasise understanding the process, rather than memorising a method through rote learning, as well as connecting the current area of study to other topics. This develops a deeper appreciation of the maths involved, and no doubt improves exam results.
My current students are studying towards National 4, National 5 or Higher SQA qualifications, so the work is focused upon the mathematics they are weakest in. I use a mixture of theory, textbook examples, past papers and online resources to improve knowledge, avoiding telling the students "what" to do, and instead encouraging them to figure out "why" they are doing it, before executing that.
I give weekly tasks to complete which I review at the beginning of each lesson.
I have taught maths informally for around 10 years - throughout school I contributed to the learning of others as well as my own. During university I constantly helped my fellow students to understand the course content. Formally, I have been a maths tutor for 3 years, teaching around 20 students across Edinburgh.
Students that spent significant time with me report a dramatic increase in their ability to tackle exam questions, confidence in their understanding, and a new found ability to communicate maths verbally. I have had some repeat students, say from National 5 to Higher, who have asked to continue lessons due to the improvements they have experienced.
If you cancel a lesson that has already been organised, I expect full payment for that lesson

Mathematics Tutor: December 2014 – Present
I help students in their study of the SQA maths curriculum. I teach, monitor their progress, assign tasks and provide advice, and offer a constant point of contact. I like to discuss and investigate mathematics with the children rather than encourage rote learning. Seeing the children’s confidence and ability improve is very rewarding, as is creating a friendly, relaxed and supportive relationship with them.
Meditation Teaching: January 2018 - present
Currently training with the British School of Meditation to become a qualified meditation teacher. I will run classes, give one-to-one instruction and teach family and friends. The qualification is at RQF Level 3, equivalent to SCQF Level 6 and is accredited by Ascentis. Involves research, writing essays, evaluating my practice, giving talks and leading meditation sessions.
