Genius tutor looking to mentor budding geniuses in piano or singing in London. (Well, perhaps that’s an exaggeration, but I do simplify complexity!)

Methodology

I am a creative teacher with a comprehensive and flexible curriculum. I have a good sense of humour too. I teach many styles to all ages and levels. I teach sight-reading, playing by ear (figuring out tunes, improvisation), composing, theory, music history, jazz, and prepare students for exams (if appropriate). My students smile a lot.

I am a Montessori teacher. In basic terms this means that I am very aware of the importance of following the student's interest and her sense of discovery. At the same time I offer a comprehensive and systematic curriculum.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach history (ancient, medieval, modern) and music (singing and piano).

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have an MA Ancient World Studies, a BA (Hons) Philosophy and History (upper 2:1), and a Montessori Diploma ("commended").

- How much do you charge?

I charge £20 for half an hour, £28 for forty-five minutes, and £39 for one hour.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at students' homes in London. I mainly teach in the post code areas of NW3, NW8, and NW6 (Camden, Hampstead, West Hampstead, South Hampstead, Chalk Farm, Primrose Hill, Swiss Cottage, Belsize Park, Gospel Oak, Frognal, Childs Hill, St John's Wood, and Lisson Grove).

- When are you available?

Mondays to Fridays: 3pm - 8pm
Saturdays: 9am - 5pm

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach adults and children from the age of six (sometimes five). I teach beginners and intermediates.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

In regard to music, some students enjoy preparing for the ABRSM exams (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music).

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Experience

I have been teaching for about 17 years! Many of my students have made music an integral part of their lives. Many have done well in exams, in concerts that I arranged, and some went on to study music at degree level and made careers in music.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been a private tutor since 2000, developing my own curriculum. I have taught at state schools, Montessori nursery schools, and a Montessori elementary private school as a classroom teacher.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have an up-to-date DBS Certificate.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My music students can sight-read well and play by ear.

Jonathan has taught the piano to our son since the beginning when he was 7 years old. He has managed to nudge our son into loving piano music and making him own the instrument with all its potentialities rather than the all-too-often rot learning seen in many instances. Myself an amateur musician, this has been a pleasure to see my son develop his taste for music and piano playing and discover that classical music is a living art.

Two of my children (aged 9 and 6) learn singing and piano with Jonathan. My oldest has had lessons with him for nearly 4 years. They both very much enjoy their lessons and are progressing well. Jonathan has a wonderful manner with them, makes the lessons fun - particularly important for the younger children - and motivates them. He also communicates well with me re their progress and his plans for them. I would wholeheartedly recommend Jonathan.
