About Edelgard

I am a German National and have a teaching qualification obtained in Germany. I can teach different levels including students preparing for their GCSE and A-level exams as well as adults. I have been teaching at secondary schools, colleges, in companies and at the Ministry of Defence.

About the lesson

I approach each topic by covering all skills (reading, speaking, writing, listening) and use different materials e.g. textbooks, texts and videos from the internet, audios, role plays and games. I provide homework if necessary and advise on extra activities that would help learning. I am enthusiastic about teaching and can tailor lessons to your needs and personality.

Perfect! Edelgard is one of the best tutors I have ever had. The lessons always have a perfect balance of hard work and conversation around the topic and german culture. She has helped me pick up basic german really quickly, and also greatly helped my partner advance her confidence in conversational-level german. I could not recommend Edelgard any higher.

Perfect! I have been studying German A2/B1 with Edelgard for a couple of months. She quickly identified my level (school plus a short period living in Germany 40 yrs ago) and has already helped me to fill in some gaps in my basic knowledge. I am learning German as a hobby, and Edelgard is very flexible with what we do, encouraging me to speak and build my confidence in each lesson, without putting too much pressure on me. The books and online resources that we are using are clear and well designed. Even though our time together has been fairly short so far, I feel that I have made real progress. I find Edelgard very friendly and easy to work with, and look forward to my lesson every week. I also enjoy the homework she sets, which gives me a framework each week around which to base my independent studies.

Edelgard's response
It´s a pleasure to work together with Conrad as he is motivated and engaged in the lessons. He has already made good progress in the German Grammar. I´m confident that he will achieve a good grade in his exam with more practice and if he works a bit harder.

Perfect! My 15-year-old son’s confidence in speaking German is already improving after only a few sessions with Edelgard. He enjoys their sessions and said (unprompted!) that he thought working with her was really helping. She has also given him a good insight into the English GCSE process which has really helped him prepare for his mocks.

Edelgard is a friendly and patient person. I always enjoyed our wide-ranging conversations; she has many interests as well as being an excellent teacher.

I needed German for work initially, and we found a book together to suit my needs. The lesson structure is very engaging and flexible - and if I felt like just talking about food or movies or anything else, we just did that, and in other lessons, we focused on workplace-related language and grammar. Lessons have exceeded my expectations.

I was looking for a German tutor but found so much more. In fact, my husband said he heard so much laughter and friendly voices that he doubted I was actually learning German, and yet I am now fluent and can hold a conversation. Many native speakers have complimented me on my ability to speak German.

My wife and I had the pleasure of having Edelgard as our German tutor for two and a half years, when we moved to Switzerland. Edelgard is very professional, personable, and worked very hard to provide us with the best materials that we needed. She was patient but challenging and helped us to make great progress with our German. We highly recommend her.

Edelgard helped us prepare as a family for a new life in Germany over a period of nine months.

Edelgard was able to tailor lessons to introduce the language to our three year old, and then separately for our six year old. She used a variety of media and introduced the children to German culture and holiday celebrations in addition to just the language.

Edelgard was also patient with us parents, teasing out and bringing back to life the German we had studied at school.

Edelgard was always prompt, well prepared, and keen to share her language with us.

Although moving to Germany was a big step, the preparation Edelgard gave to all of us made it much easier to make the transition.

We highly recommend her!

Edelgard has been tutoring my daughter a little over a year in preperation for her GCSEs. We have found her to be engaging and organized. Not only have her grades been consistent 8s and 9s, but she has helped improve my daughters interest and confidence in the language.

I would happily recommend Edelgard!

I attended lessons with Edelgard from April 2016 to mid January 2017, toward the latter part on a on-to-one basis. Edelgard was a fantastic support, with excellent guidance through the grammar headaches and pitching our conversational German at a good level but always challenging previously covered topics whist pushing into the unfamilier areas. We worked closely with Themen1 aktuell Kursbuch + Arbeitsbuch. Homework was consistent and support was always available outside of lesson periods. Edelgard is fun, possesses a warmth, and a good feel for her student capabilities, strengths and weeknesses. The lessons had good structure, with lots of opportunity to discuss homework points covered in the lessons. Audio tools were also part of the lessons.
My lessons were only curtailed through business budget constraints and it was such a pity to have stopped.
I whole heartedly recommend Edelgard to the applied post

I was taught by Edelgard for around 8 weeks before I moved to Germany, unfortunately I only completed one hour a week of German lessons. I was advised by Edelgard to complete more than this but time and money constraints (as I am a student) got in the way. As a complete beginner she explained that I should let her know if she was going at the correct speed for me to learn. This was correct and very helpful. And I feel confident to greet people and communicate in a shop environment.

Find out more about Edelgard

Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
I speak the language fluently because I am a German national.
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
In my opinion Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is one of the most influential writers of the German language. His work has had a huge influence on literature, politics, and philosophy in the Western world from the late 18th century to the present.
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?
I like the expression „Das ist mir Wurst.“(That's sausage to me)
A phrase expressing indifference, meaning "I don't care" or "It's all the same to me“
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Speaking my native language matters a lot to me as it connects me with my home country and roots.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
The German grammar can be a bit challenging at the start but it gets easier with time once you know the rules. It helps if you study every day, listen to videos, pod casts and use apps like duolingo
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
I studied English and French at school and enjoyed learning foreign languages. It was important to me that the teachers could explain well in a way I understood and I also had fun in my lessons.

How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

If you travel to a foreign country and are able to have a conversation in the target language it´s a very satisfying experience for yourself but also the people in the target country will appreciate it if you speak or try to speak their language. I made progress when I was surrounded by the target language (people, tv, etc.) and listened and spoke the language every day.
What makes you a Superprof in language?
I think because I am a German National and know my language very well but also because I like to teach my language to other people. It is very encouraging for me to see the progress of my students; especially if they started as beginners and are able to speak my language in due course almost fluently. I always tailor my lessons to the students needs and is important to me that they enjoy their lessons. I also think that is crucial that you are able to explain the grammar very well as many students struggle with this at the beginning and it´s very satisfying for me if students understand it better with my help and enjoy learning the German language. For me it´s also very important to establish good relationships between me and my students as this plays a huge part in the learning process and enjoying the lessons.
