About Derek
I’m a senior and lead 3D character animator with 25+ years of experience in film, TV, games, and VFX.
I currently teach character animation at Gnomon and advanced 3D animation at California State University, Long Beach.
I’ve worked on projects including Doom Patrol, Barnyard, Speed Racer, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and God of War III.
My strength is spotting what isn’t working in an animation and helping you figure out what to fix first.
If your shot feels stiff, weightless, unclear, or just “off,” I can help you see why.

Bring me your animation shot, demo reel, animation test, personal project, or short-film sequence.
We’ll watch your work together and focus on the changes that will make the biggest difference.
I can help with timing, weight, body mechanics, posing, performance, clarity, and polish.
You’ll leave knowing what is hurting the animation, what to fix first, and how to make it stronger.
You can work in Maya, Blender, or any other animation software. I’m reviewing your animation from a video or playblast, not working inside your scene file.
These sessions are best for animation students, junior animators, and working artists who want an experienced second set of eyes on their work.

Perfect! Derek has been helping me improve my animation skills. I am an experienced game animator, but I reached a point where I felt stuck and wasn't sure how to improve my animation skills. At my job, I don't always get enough feedback, so having someone who can give me detailed guidance has been really helpful. It has also been great to work with him on animation styles that I have never tried before.
I'm looking forward to continuing to learn with him and improving my skills together :)- Hyeon is great to work with. She comes prepared, asks good questions, and is very open to feedback.Derek's response :
She has a strong eye and clearly cares about improving. She can keep growing by pushing her poses further, making the weight shifts clearer, and spending more time on the small details.
Overall, she has a great attitude and I enjoy working with her.
Perfect! He helped so much with so many technical parts of Maya!
- Andrea is ambitious and eager to learn. I look forward to working more with herDerek's response :

You usually don’t need a full hour to get useful feedback.
Most reviews are focused 30-minute sessions. Send me a playblast, video, reel section, or animation test and we’ll concentrate on the biggest issues first.
If we need more time, we can always continue.
The goal isn’t to fill an hour. It’s to help you make the animation better as quickly as possible.
