About Christine
Before commencing work in education as senior science technician at Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College (2000-2006), and later as a teaching assistant at Cardinal Langley Roman Catholic High School (2006-2007) I devoted nine years to bringing up my own children full time and volunteering as a parent helper at their primary school. Prior to this (1983-1991) I worked in industry, principally the automotive industry, in the fields of quality control, time and motion and finally as an estimator in product development.
I successfully completed my initial teacher training via the GTP scheme at Matthew Moss School in Rochdale in 2008. Here I taught science at KS3 and chemistry at KS4 at a school renowned for its innovative teaching ideas which emphasise the importance of strong relationships between teachers and pupils.
After five years as a cover supervisor at Canon Slade School in Bolton (2008-2013), a school with a reputation for high academic standards, I asked for, and was given, the opportunity to complete my probationary year teaching geography. I taught across the full age and ability range at KS3 and KS4 completing my training in April 2015.
During this time, two terms of which was full time, I developed my teaching skills by reflective practice, observation of other teachers and by following the advice and guidance of my mentors. I also continued to coordinate the school’s DofE programme and attained my Mountain Leader qualification during the school holidays. After completion of my probationary period I continued to teach geography part time and to cover lessons. My relocation away from the Bolton area required me to leave the school in October 2015.

My role as DofE coordinator has emphasised to me the value of strong positive relationships with pupils which I now believe to be the key to successful teaching. I have used many different strategies to further this, for example, by regularly using rewards such as ‘postcards home’, and by using my time on duty to engage with pupils. I have also involved myself with sports events and field trips, for example, a geography weekend for year 10 pupils at Blencathra Field Study Centre in the Lake District. I think it is important for pupils to see that you have a sense of humour; an essential quality on the ‘Low Ropes’ activity at Blencathra. It is also nice for them to see teachers working together in an informal setting.
My probationary year has also brought home to me the value of timely marking of pupils’ work, not only to inform progress and attitude to learning, but as a continuous dialogue between pupil and teacher. Recording pupils’ performance and using data has also been invaluable to me when feeding back to parents and planning for individual needs. I regularly used pupils’ planning diaries to communicate with parents, because as a parent myself, I realised that all parents want their children to do well and need feedback in order to support their child at home.
My experience as a cover supervisor has given me skills in quickly establishing effective working relationships with pupils and in being able to adapt to different and sometimes challenging situations. This experience has emphasised to me the importance of working as part of the whole school team in order to support pupils effectively.
Working across the whole school has given me an overview of the whole school curriculum and I have used this knowledge to put pupils’ learning into context. For example, linking learning about different continents in year 7 in geography to their learning in history about the colonisation of America. I also find cross-curricular links useful in lesson planning as it helps me to identify areas of convergence and areas where pupils may have difficulty.
Learning to learn was a key concept of my training at Matthew Moss School and I have built this into my practice. I believe an important part of this is for pupils to understand how they themselves learn. For example, by teaching them that they should not be afraid of being puzzled because this is a key part of the learning process. I tell them that the feeling of puzzlement is caused by their brains ‘growing’ and they should see learning as a challenge. Facts are often forgotten but knowing how to learn is a skill for life.
