About Jillian
I am a violin tutor with 7 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music alongside formal examiner training from ABRSM that I received through an associate examiner development program. While I do not currently examine for ABRSM, my examiner training gave me an insider understanding of how examinations are conducted and assessed that transforms the quality of my examination preparation teaching. I have helped over 250 students through ABRSM and Trinity violin examinations with a pass rate of approximately 97% and a distinction rate approximately 40% higher than the national average.

My violin teaching is specifically optimised for ABRSM and Trinity graded examination preparation, and I have developed what I believe is the most comprehensive and strategically intelligent approach to examination preparation available from a private tutor. I begin examination preparation by working through the examination requirements with the student in analytical detail — understanding the marking criteria and how marks are distributed across pieces, scales, aural tests, and sight-reading before any repertoire is chosen, because this understanding should inform every preparation decision. Repertoire selection is genuinely strategic — I choose pieces that play to each student's particular strengths, that present achievable technical challenges, and that will develop specific skills most relevant to their overall playing development. Scale preparation follows a systematic programme that begins twelve weeks before an examination — every required scale, arpeggio, and broken chord is worked through in the required format, at the required tempo, with the required bowing, weekly until it is completely secure. Aural test preparation is given equal time to piece preparation because it accounts for a significant percentage of the total mark. Sight-reading is developed through a graduated programme using materials slightly above the current ABRSM grade level — reading material at the grade below one is targeting is consistently more effective than reading at grade level. Mock examinations are conducted in my teaching space under real conditions — timing, starting on instruction, limited time to tune, everything as close to the actual experience as I can create. My commitment to every examination student is that they are as prepared as dedicated preparation can make anyone.
