About Oliver

I'm Ollie and having graduated from Durham University with a Joint Honours in Mathematics and Philosophy in 2025, I am pursuing a career as a lawyer. Although I am not continuing my own mathematical career, mathematics and physics remains one of my great passions. Because of this I would like to be able to help others enjoy doing maths and physics like I have. I am equally passionate about helping struggling students to feel confident, as I am helping a keen mathematician reach their full potential.

At A level I achieved A*'s in Maths and Physics and an A in further mathematics. I also studied History of Art!

On the mathematical part of my degree I specialised in mathematical physics, and so my studies consisted largely in Quantum Mechanics, Special Relativity and other fun topics like cryptography. On the philosophy side I focused on metaphysics. This has kept my mathematics skills in practice, and I enjoy applying them to tutoring.

I pride myself on being friendly and approachable, and on having good people skills which I have used and improved through tutoring, leadership roles at school and university, and work in the legal sector. It's certainly true that knowing lots of maths is no use if you can't communicate it effectively, in a way that works for each individual student.

In all, I genuinely enjoy doing mathematics and physics, and in particular watching students flourish in these subjects. I hope that I can help you do the same.

Aside from my studies, I love playing the drums, travelling, sketching, socialising and playing cricket and tennis.

I find students learn best when given the opportunity to work through questions and have interventions by their tutor tailored to them. As such, every tutoring session looks different. My style and the content is tailored to the student's needs at all times.

However, I believe thorough discussion of underlying ideas, and extensive practice, creates students who are capable of more than repetition. Rather, they can be agile and capable mathematicians and physicists.

As well as helping students understand the content and questions in depth, I also want to pass on the practical wisdom I've built up over years of exams at school and university.

Lessons will typically last one hour. However, I am happy to discuss how I can accommodate any student's needs and schedule.

I hope  to help GCSE and A level students who might struggle with mathematics or physics, or who are capable but wish to achieve the highest grades in preparation for university applications.

I will always dedicate at least as much time as I spend in a tutoring session, preparing for that session. This means that I am always well prepared and flexible on the content and direction of a session, so that we can maximise the benefit the student gains. I hope it is understood that this is reflected in my rate.

Please do feel free to discuss travel costs with me, as this naturally depends on the distance required to travel.
