With over a decade in the classroom, teaching literature stops being about simply covering the syllabus and starts becoming something closer to a long conversation you keep having with different groups of students each year, since the same novel that falls flat with one class can completely take off with another, and after enough years that unpredictability becomes expected rather than frustrating; ten years in, most lesson plans have been rebuilt more than once, stripped of whatever didn't actually get students thinking and left with whatever did, and the harder skill that develops over time isn't knowing every possible interpretation of a text cold, it's knowing which parts of that knowledge actually matter for the students sitting in front of you on a given day, which tangents are worth chasing because they're leading somewhere real, and which ones need to be gently pulled back, all of which ends up shaping not just how a lesson gets planned but how a teacher listens, since experience makes it easier to hear the difference between a student genuinely wrestling with a text and one just repeating what they think the teacher wants to hear.
