About David

Jazz Music Teacher – BA Jazz Honours Degree. Teaching Duties – Teaching a variety of students of all ages, from basic saxophone to advanced. Encompassing all aspects of jazz harmony and jazz improvisation. I have my own quartet and manage as well as perform at various well-known jazz venues up and down the country. Playing my own compositions as well as classic jazz standards from jazz repertoire songbooks. Experience and knowledge. 20 years + I first began teaching the saxophone privately to people who approached me when I was with the UK Blue Note award-winning band US3 in 1996. I have received positive feedback, been featured in (jazz magazine) and received many compliments on my unique sound and teaching methodology, when improvising. This led me to teaching and mentoring other jazz enthusiasts. I have studied with world-renowned jazz saxophonist Ralph Moore and who has mentored me when he visits the UK. Ralph Moore believed in me and saw my style was unique and my interpretation and improvisation are unseen before. Over the years I have been tutored by Antoine Roney, Kenny Garrett and Bobby Watson and had the privilege to have performed with these iconic musicians at various times over the past twenty years. In 1997 I was invited to the University of Murcia in Spain to teach a jazz day saxophone jazz workshop, as part of their international jazz summer school. This has led to carrying out other workshops in Spain at the La Purísima del Grado School. I have taught saxophone and flute at different levels within primary school as a teaching assistant, also provided lessons for 11 to 16 years at Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton and at World Heartbeat Music Academy in Wandsworth, working alongside Tony Kofi and Byron Wallen. I continue to work with students on a private basis, from beginner to advanced, working with students at university to supplement their academic learning. I have found it of great importance to identify a student's preferred learning and adapting my teaching to allow each pupil to meet their full potential and achieve their full potential. I am very passionate about jazz past, present and the future; I see my role as mentor, teacher and performer. I encourage my students to research jazz history to promote their sound to ensure it is not a version of somebody else but unique. I am proud of my students, as several of them have achieved excellent music grades enabling them to pursue their goal of auditioning and attending university to complete their music degree. I have been very fortunate to work alongside Ralph Moore and Kenny Garrett who mentored me and passed down to me their concepts, from Freddie Hubbard. I have studied these concepts and over the years developed my own jazz improvisation, jazz harmony and jazz concepts.

My theory and teaching show the students the importance of: - 1. How to launch your solo. 2. How to build your solo tension and release. 3. Scale choices and modes, what scale/note to weave through solo. 4. How to come out of the solo. 5. The importance of having a good sound on the saxophone. 6. Developing good dexterity with full range of the saxophone, long tone studies etc. 7. Developing the student's personal sound that gives him/her their own sound helps students with their own forward thinking. I have performed at many major jazz festivals around the world and I have performed at Ronnie Scott's with Bobby Watson, Ralph Moore and Jerry Bergonzi. I have worked in film and TV most recently on Peaky Blinders, Halcyon and composed music for a piece commissioned for the BBC. I have my own quartet and regularly perform classics from jazz legends, such as John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and Duke Ellington, performing in and around London. I can communicate at all levels; I enjoy the interaction with my students, having received positive feedback from students, peers and parents that my teaching methods and concepts have given students confidence in achieving their musical goals and developing them and putting them on the path to achieving their own uniqueness. I am very passionate about Jazz and one of the reasons I enrolled on the BA jazz course was so I could give something back and give myself additional grounding to enable me to teach jazz at university and schools on a freelance basis. I am now very keen to explore the possibility of teaching students attending music courses to develop their jazz basics and assist in raising the jazz profile. I believe my teaching style and experience would be a great addition in helping your students perfect their craft and achieve their goals. Kind Regards, David Angol davidangol.com Here’s what Jerry Bergonzi has to say about David Angol; Dave Angol and I have become good friends over the years. We have shared musical ideas and we have played together in London at the Vortex. He has his own sound with echoes of many of my favourite players. Give him a listen. Jerry Bergonzi
