About Zahra
One time, I had a college freshman get overwhelmed during our session on the latest calculus lesson. She had midterms in a few weeks, so I needed to help her focus to study. I first had her close her book and take a deep breath, counting out as she released some tension.
Then, I asked her what part of the lesson she was most confused about. She told me that she had gotten confused at a certain point, so I suggested we go back to that place in our lesson and review. While we reviewed, she pointed out exactly what confused her—an equation that was briefly covered a few weeks before. This made her feel even more overwhelmed.
We still had 15 minutes left in our session, so I asked her if she wanted to keep going with the lesson. She said she did, but she was still pretty upset. I suggested that she take a break and we reschedule for the next day. I then reassured her that taking some time away from the subject would help her calm down and refocus. She came back the next day ready to review the content.

At the start of each meeting, I ask the student how they're feeling, like if they're tired or excited about something going on in their life. This helps me better prepare for any distractions or a slow lesson, and I think this also lets them know that I care about their well-being and not just that they're at the lesson. Then, I ask how if they had any wins since we last met. I find that starting with this positivity helps both of us focus on the good, which often makes for a more productive session.
I then go over the agenda for the session so that they know what to expect. I also typically give them a brief quiz to go over the previous sessions' topics and see what they remember and or where they may need additional work. After the review, I try to connect how those previous topics relate to what we're going over in the current session. I go through the lesson, which typically involves the student reading material aloud and discussing the prompts with me. Finally, I leave at least five minutes at the end of the session for any additional questions about the material.
