About Louis
I have been in musical training for a significant portion of my life. I play 3 different instruments to a high standard (trumpet, flute, and piano), have attained grade 5 music theory through ABRSM, achieved high grades in a music GCSE and A-Level, and then went on to study music further for a bachelor’s degree at the University of Liverpool (from which I graduated with a 1st). Throughout all these experiences, I have refined my understanding of musical concepts and learnt to apply them in a variety of performance, composition, and written settings to a high standard.

Music Theory is a subject which I think needs to be tailored to the learning style of every individual student. Luckily, it is also a subject which is compatible with a variety of teaching and learning methods. I aim to help students develop an understanding of musical fundamentals, and then solidify this knowledge through application in score and listening analysis. I am confident that by helping students to utilise musical knowledge in practice I can build their confidence in analysing musical features and using detailed musical language. This process will typically follow the ABRSM grading progression but can also include SMRHTSTD analysis (a structure for examining musical works in detail) which is invaluable for music assignment writing at GCSE and A-Level stages.
