About Joel
I am a professional performer who has toured internationally, and also enjoy teaching and lecturing at Brunel University in guitar, jazz arranging and improvisation.
A Berklee scholar (jazz guitar), I studied composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and my compositions have premiered in Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, NYC, Europe and the UK.
I spent the last 8 years as house guitarist at Londons Club Inegales, working with everyone from rock and jazz through to Maori Shamen, poets and classical musicians.
Composing for the Atlas Ensemble (a 30-piece orchestra showcasing the foremost artists from world traditions) led to a period of intense study and collaboration with Indian, Persian, Turkish and Arabic musicians at the Banff Centre (Canada) and the invention of the ‘half-slide’ technique, used to incorporate micro-tonal inflections into playing and approach levels of expression previously feeling unobtainable on the guitar.

Learn in a relaxed, professional environment centred around each individual students needs. Students progress at their own speed and can work towards grades or learn songs that make them interested in music.
I enjoy teaching whatever get the student excited about music and encourage student creativity and expression. For those who prefer my structure I can take them through the graded exam syllabus which goes frm beginner through to advanced.
I have 24 years experience teaching in many primary and secondary schools, and my more advanced students benefit from learning from a professional musician who has studied privatly with greats from rock (Guthrie Govan) and jazz (Adam Rogers) and shared the stage with top musicians from around the world.
As a Berklee College of Music (jazz guitar techniques) and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (composition) alumni I have a broad view of music theory. Combined with my study of theory from many different Eastern music traditions I have a unique perspective on how music really works, which I apply to my teaching of theory (classical and jazz), improvisation and composition. If you're a more advanced player and need to take your playing to the next level we can look at technique, theory, fretboard knowledge and how the pros apply this to their music. If you are interested in how jazz theory can help you elevate the sophistication of your music I also teach how it can be applied to other styles/genres.

I also teach an advanced improvisation course, where you learn exercises and strategies that have a genuine affect on the listener, rather than the 'jigsaw' effect of linking together patterns and licks to create a solo. These can be applied to any style of music.
