About Isla
I am a recent graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, with a Bachelor of Music degree in Joint Performance: Harp and Voice. I am trained in classical harp and classical singing, and now work as a freelance solo and ensemble musician. I perform folk and classical music, with particular expertise in improvisation and contemporary classical music. I currently hold an Orchestral Fellowship at the RCS.
I have experience in community settings, schools and care homes. I'm passionate about helping players of all levels develop an intristic love for what they do, and build a strong and healthy technique that will allow their skills to blossom. I turn to academia to help students unlock their potential, for example conducting research into optimising music practice for learners with impaired working memory and processing speed.
Before my degree, I obtained a distinction in my ABRSM grade 8 in Harp and Voice and grade 5 in Music Theory and Piano. I held a scholarship at the RCS for four years and won the Euing Prize for History, Form and Analysis.

My job as your teacher is to adapt my methods to suit you. Your age, playing level, preferred genre, musical goals and learning type will inform my approach. Above all, I strive to help my students make progress in their playing and enjoy themselves!
Whilst learning music you love, I will help you build a strong foundation based on 4 key topics. Equipped with this growing toolbox, over time you will gain skills and confidence as a harpist...
1. Playing Technique (a healthy posture and hand position)
2. Practice Methods (how to effectively learn outside of lessons)
3. Musical Understanding (learning about musical notation)
4. Positive Mentalities (building motivation and confidence)
I suggest a trial period of three 45 minute lessons, at which point we can discuss whether you would like to proceed with more, and if longer/shorter sessions would suit you better.
