About Margaret Alison
My name is Margaret and when I was in my 20's
I didn't like working in a Bank, so I decided to become a Piano Teacher. I got a Grade 8 Piano with the ABRSM and also did the Certificate of Teaching, CTABRSM in 2004.
I have put nearly 200 pupils in for the graded exams with the ABRSM/TrinityCollege, including Piano/Music Theory/NCM Keyboard/Popular Piano, since 1984 when I started. All the Children who wanted to do exams with me have passed
their exams either with a pass/merit or distinction ( this includes teenagers ). Some Adults have got the same, but most don't want to try it! I will never force anyone to do anything they don't want to. I have also taught the piano to a man
who was nearly blind (he stayed for 10 years) and a few children who were very mildly autistic.
One recently got a merit for an abrsm piano exam. The highest mark for a 17 year old has been a distinction of 143 out of 150 for the abrsm Initial Grade! Even just a bare pass, which is a 100 out of 150 is still good because it is 2 thirds of the total and it is a pass. I have the ability to know whether any pupil will pass or fail. I f I think they won't pass I don't put the entry in.
We will do any music pieces that they want to try at their present level. Perhaps they will progress without that exam.

I teach how to read music at the same time as playing the piano, gradually introducing notes and sensible fingering in both hands. I teach how to do sight reading and aural tests, and also piano technique (starting off simply) and all the different keys/scales. I teach ages 5 and a half to people in their late 70's and 80's ! Those that want to do exams I do ABRSM Grade 1-7/8,
and Prep Test/Initial. I do Classical/Jazz/Soft Rock/Folk/Rockschool/Popular etc I also teach Adults who just want to 'Play for fun' (no exams) playing the tune with their Right hand and doing Chords with their Left. Most Adult lessons are 1 hour a week or 3/4 hour a week. For Children the length is usually one hour, and Teens can do 3/4 hour or 1 hour a week. Music Theory is also taught to everyone. Also Song writing if it is wanted. I have had 3 of my piano pieces put in EPTA's Piano Professional Magazine. (Oct 2022/Jan 2024) I try to make each lesson fun and informative. In October 2024 I had A Christmas Song called Baby Jesus included in EPTA's Piano Professional Magazine and this goes most of the way round the World!
I can teach how to read music or we can learn chords and scales
without books and learn how to improvise and possibly learn Jazz with or without books.
