About Jill
I am a qualified Primary School Teacher with a specialism in English. I qualified as a teacher from the University of Exeter in 2008.
I taught Primary School Children from age 5 to 11 for two years in London and three years in Devon. I have experience in helping children who are having problems with reading and writing to gain confidence and enjoyment and to help them catch up with their peers.
I am new to one-to-one home tuition.

If you are concerned that your Primary School child is slipping further and further behind with their reading and writing skills, I could be just the Tutor for you.
I offer reading and writing sessions to Primary School aged children, finding a child's strengths and interests and using these to build on their Literacy skills and create positive learning habits.
I am happy to work with parents and children together to help make Literacy fun for all the family.
My teaching style focuses on building self-esteem as well as increasing the skills and strategies needed to be a good reader and writer. Games, crafts and storytelling all help to create a reason to read/write and sessions are personalised to each student. Expectations during my sessions are clear, with learning goals informed by the National Curriculum Assessments, but I offer all students choices within sessions and mini learning rewards for their effort and achievements.
The first free session is a chance for the student and I to start getting to know each other. They will be invited to bring "five favourites" with them to the session, such as a favourite book, toy, game, film, magazine, food, pet (well, a photo perhaps)... anything they like! We'll use these as a starting point for designing some working rewards and to start reading and/or writing activities. If you like me and want to continue, then sessions will develop a structure based on the student's needs, with the aim of the student making accelerated progress to catch up with their peers. I would be in your lives only while I'm needed... a bit like Mary Poppins! My aim is to give the student the strategies they need to catch up with their peers and let their Literacy skills take off.
