- Classes

What actually happens at class?
Upon arrival, your child will collect their class folder, which contains the day's class work. If your child is studying maths they will then proceed to the main hall where they will sit at their allocated area. If your child is studying English, they will read to a Kumon assistant. For children studying English and maths, it is advised they initially do their English work first as marking of English class work takes longer. These children should therefore also queue to read.
Once seated, your child will swap their old homework for new worksheets. They will then complete their work in class independently before having it marked. Whilst waiting for classwork to be marked, your child will often engage in other activities. They may try a challenging supplementary activity such as a number board exercise which tests number recognition, number patterns and co-ordination skills. English students may choose to read one of the books at the centre independently. For students studying English and maths, marking time is spent completing their classwork for their second subject. Classwork is then returned to your child and they are asked to correct any mistakes. Once corrections have been completed, your child will speak to their marker and receive feedback on that day's work and their progress. It is at this point that your child will also be rewarded with stickers for their Membership Card. Your child is then free to leave the centre. However I would advise that you have a look in their student folder to ensure your child has taken all of their homework. Typically, your child will be in class for approximately 20-30 minutes per subject and you are required to wait on-site during this time.
Will my child stay for the full session?
The centre is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 5pm – 7pm. It is not necessary to stay for the full two hours that a study centre is open. Kumon runs on a drop-in basis with students coming to class for 20-30 minutes during the time that the study centre is open. We do however require that parents or guardians stay on-site while their child is in the study centre.

- Ages and Levels Covered

At the Seven Kings Study Centre students can start at the age of 4 right up to adults.

The Kumon programmes do not follow the national curriculum but work in a logical sequential way to develop mathematics and English skills to a level equivalent to "A" level topics. All children are able to work at the most suitable pace for themselves meaning it is suitable for children requiring support through to those requiring additional challenge to school work. Many of our children study above school level as the programme encourages development of potential.

We have lots of Kumon competitions and quizzes throughout the year, including the holiday Quests.

Award ceremonies take place once a year to recognise the progress of students. Certificates are awarded to students working at a higher level than their peers and those who have made significant progress in their study skills. These award ceremonies are just one of a number of ways that we recognise student achievement and encourage motivation throughout the programme and to completion.

- Centre Director(s)

My name is Henna Patel and I run the Ilford, Seven Kings Centre. I took over the centre in January 2011, but the centre has been established since 1997. Prior to being a Kumon instructor I was an Investment Banker in the city. I first learnt about Kumon 14 years ago, when my little brother started the maths programme, he later went on to study the English programme and was a completer in both subjects. Having seen how much Kumon has helped him become a very confident and driven young man with great life skills, I jumped at the chance of being able to give other students the same opportunities and became a Kumon Instructor!
