About Laura
My post-secondary education consists of five years spent at the University of British Columbia where I completed two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts with majors in English Linguistics, English Literature, and Sociology, and a Bachelor of Education specializing in Secondary English.
Professionally, I have been employed in the public school system in Surrey, BC, Canada since 2009. Most of the courses I teach are within the English Language Arts curriculum including Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, Composition, Creative Writing, Literary Studies, and Media Studies. On the 2023 AP English Literature and Composition Exam, 38% of my students achieved a standing of "very well qualified" compared to the average of 34% provincially and 28% globally.
Other subjects with which I have teaching experience are Career Life Education, Choir/Choral Music, French, History, Humanities, Leadership, Psychology, and Social Justice.
My experience outside of the classroom includes private tutoring (in-person and online) to elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students as well as proofreading/editing compositions. I also spent two years during the peak of the pandemic teaching students online to help them graduate with a BC high school diploma.

As an experienced teacher of up to 30 students in a classroom and up to 120 students per semester, I have practical experience with differentiated learning which is not only acknowledging that people learn in different ways but implementing various teaching methods to address this diversity. Naturally, this lends itself to highly effective one-on-one tutoring: I'm happy to hear how you learn best and adapt my teaching style; similarly, if we are struggling I have the knowledge, skills, and patience to try other methods until you feel confident and are proud of your progress.
My formal education and most in-person/online teaching experience is with high school students (grades 8-12), but I do have tutoring experience with intermediate elementary (grades 5-7) and post-secondary students as well as adults.
My teaching philosophy focuses on developing literacy skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and various forms of thinking (creative, critical, and reflective) that extend beyond the classroom so students can make more meaning in their lives.
