About Finn
I’m Finn. I love teaching and the connections it has allowed me to make.
My love of travel and connecting with new cultures began when I was five years old. My father got a job at an international school in Cajamarca, Peru, and I still remember the excitement of moving overseas for a big adventure. This marked the start of my schooling, and I grew up as a student in many more international schools across Peru, Chile, and Ghana. My experience growing up overseas has firmly shaped who I am. It sparked my love of the Spanish language, Latin American music (especially guitar), football, photography, connecting with people, and much more.
Upon graduating high school, it seemed unlikely that any career could provide me with the opportunity to share my love of Spanish and music every day, other than becoming a teacher. I went on to study classical guitar performance at Victoria University, with a strong emphasis on music from South America, which my guitar teacher in Chile had inspired me to explore.
To share my passion for music with others, it was an easy decision to follow up my studies with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching. I have loved every moment of my first three years teaching, and the ability it has given me to encourage others to develop their love of learning about the world. This has been possible not just in my Spanish and Music classrooms, but also through various extracurricular activities I’ve been involved with, such as Guitar Ensemble, School Production Band, Futsal, Choirs, and even Dragon Boating.
Teaching has also provided me with opportunities to travel and pursue my passions for the outdoors, sports, meeting new people, and hobbies like photography. Over the past few school holidays, I have been fortunate to immerse myself in the cultures of the USA, Turkey, Greece, Peru, and Central America.
Both of my parents still teach overseas and speak very highly of the experience, particularly the cross-cultural connections they’re able to make. They have strongly inspired me to follow in their footsteps.
My experience growing up in international schools, travelling, and now teaching has made me very aware that every learner is unique. It has also led me to develop a teaching philosophy that places students at the centre of their learning. With this in mind, I hope to inspire a lifelong culture of learning and curiosity, through which every student can thrive.
