Creig's CV

Personal Statement:
I am a highly experienced, enthusiastic Modern Languages teacher who has a passion for my subject and is keen to pass this on to all my pupils regardless of age, stage or ability. I am very adept in using ICT in my lessons to help motivate my pupils. I have had experience of working in challenging schools and therefore have excellent behaviour as well as classroom management skills. I am always eager to improve on my teaching practice and introduce new strategies to raise achievement and attainment. I believe this is essential to help increase the number of pupils choosing to study a foreign language in the senior phase of their education. I have also recently obtained full QTS status enabling me to teach in English secondary schools.

Relevant Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
In my opinion the key purpose of a teacher is to provide every pupil with a high-quality education. I believe I have the skills to achieve this.
Classroom Management: Effective classroom management is key to effective learning and teaching. I demonstrate high order skills in this area, which has a direct impact on learning.
Learning & Teaching: Research into learning and teaching has led me to introduce various formative assessment strategies e.g. using learning intentions, traffic lighting, progress diaries, show me boards, true/false cards, multiple choice cards, pupil evaluations and Literacy Tags to help assess pupils work.
Active Learning: I encourage active learning by creating quizzes and interactive games (using Kahoot, Quizlet, Quia, Tinycards, Babbel, Linguascope, Busuu and a website called This is Language) as well as effectively using the Smartboard to engage pupils in the learning process and track their progress using formative assessment on Smart Amp 2. I also regularly get pupils involved in meaningful role plays and project work. I am very confident in the use of ICT in my classroom to help motivate pupils. I regularly use Edmodo to assign homework, track pupils progress and provide extension materials. I also ensure that IDL (Interdisciplinary Learning) takes place in my classroom so that pupils can see that studying languages can be linked with so many other subjects/faculties in their school. I firmly believe that if pupils can see that language learning has an impact on so many other aspects of their education then this will improve motivation and attainment.
ICT: I am very confident in the use of IT and was a GLOW representative at Galashiels Academy for Modern Languages. I actively support colleagues in the effective use of IT in learning and teaching.
Positive Behaviour: I was previously a member of a BBBL (Better Behaviour, Better Learning) group and have implemented a positive behaviour policy within my classroom. I nurture self-esteem through encouragement and praise. I also ensure that I always maintain a calm manner in my classroom as I believe this helps build a more effective bond with my pupils. I am also of the opinion that restorative discussions and practice with pupils who display challenging behaviour in class are the correct way forward to ensure that all my pupils feel included, respected and encouraged in class.
Raising Achievement: To challenge underachievement and raise attainment, I have regular discussions with pupils about their progress and set realistic and achievable targets regarding next steps. I also ensure that meaningful homework is set on a regular basis and that homework is completed on the date expected, pupils’ attendance records are checked on a regular basis and I use tracking and monitoring on SEEMIS (a software programme) to aid pupils in their learning. I also use raw data obtained from MIDYIS (a software package) which provides statistical feedback on pupils’ verbal, numerical and non-verbal/spatial skills to help gauge the level that they should realistically be working at in the senior phase of their education. I was also a PSP teacher (Pupil Support Teacher) whilst teaching at Galashiels Academy and helped pupils to develop a Growth Mindset. Pupils received individual guidance as to how they could make progress and deal with setbacks in a positive manner.
Communication Skills: I can communicate clearly and effectively. I explain my subject in a manner that pupils understand. They are happy to ask me questions or speak to me if there is a problem. I enjoy participating in departmental and whole school meetings.
Team Work: Good interpersonal skills, reliability and working to deadlines are characteristics I possess and are necessary to be an effective team member. As well as departmental work I have been on whole school committees e.g. BBBL (Better Behaviour, Better Learning), Tapestry (Embedding Formative Assessment in my teaching) and Cooperative Learning. I participate in the sharing of positive strategies to raise attainment.
Leadership: I have been involved in mentoring student teachers during my teaching career as well as providing support and guidance for foreign language assistants. In a number of schools’ I was involved in setting appropriate work for classes as well as helping getting classes through National Qualification courses during staff absences. As the sole member of staff qualified to teach German at Galashiels Academy I was also responsible for the development of materials and assessment of pupils both in the junior (S1 – S3) as well as senior stage (S4 – S5) of the school.
Professional Development: I regularly attend courses to keep abreast of what is happening in education in general and my subject area to source good practice. I have also worked for the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) as an examination marker for a substantial number of years and have therefore developed a very sound understanding of what is expected from my pupils to ensure that they feel confident and fully prepared for when they sit their final exams.
Working collaboratively: As a student teacher I helped primary colleagues by team teaching German and French in two local primaries and preparing pupils for the transition to secondary MFL.
Whole School Development: I have been involved in organising an exchange trip to Germany, school discos, S1 event days, school musicals, revision clubs and provided one-to-one assistance in a previous school’s learning support base.
Reflective Attributes: I am a reflective practitioner. I discuss with colleagues what has worked well with classes and share and reflect on what has not gone so well to enhance my pupils learning. I observe colleagues to share good practice. I would welcome the chance to share these attributes with the staff and pupils in your school.
