About Ruby
I have worked in education as a teacher, tutor and mentor for almost 20 years, gaining varied experience with students of all ages, from Early Years to University level. I am passionate about teaching and I strongly believe in tailoring my lessons to the needs of each individual student, so that they can achieve their full potential. I am not a 'worksheet' tutor - I do occasionally dip into existing resources and textbooks, but I also develop my own materials in response to a student's needs and individual learning style. Over the years, I have built up a library of resources, including games and other creative learning tools, which I draw upon to create engaging and fun lessons. I have worked as a Primary School Learning Mentor, helping children to overcome emotional and behavioural obstacles to learning, and I also have many years of one-to-one tutoring experience with Primary children, including Early Years. One of my specialisms as a tutor is in Early Years literacy and numeracy, using a child-led, play-based approach to give young children a head start in their reading, writing and maths. I have also found that my highly-individualised, fun approach helps children who are behind in their key numeracy and literacy skills - not only to catch up, but also to regain their confidence, self-esteem and love of learning. I ran Arts and Crafts workshops with home-educated children for several years, and I bring this creativity into my lessons with this age group, regardless of the subject. In 2008, I designed and published a children's activity book called 'The Feelings Artbook', which explores emotional intelligence through drawing. The book was very successful and is now in its Second Edition. I have extensive experience tutoring for 11+ and 13+ entrance exams, with many students gaining places at top selective schools. I can tutor all aspects of 11+ including Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, English, Creative Writing and Maths. Please note I only tutor Maths up to 11+ level but can tutor all other aspects of 13+ entrance exams. I also have solid experience tutoring students for both GCSE and A-Level English Literature, as well as Creative Writing. I have an MA in Creative Writing, gaining a Distinction. I taught adult Creative Writing classes for many years at the London School of Journalism, using a syllabus I devised myself and I also worked as a tutor on the distance learning course for Novel Writing and Short Stories, offering detailed feedback on students' written submissions. As such, I have excellent writing skills, both creative and academic, and I also have experience in tutoring Essay Writing and Study Skills up to University level. Since the start of 2022, I have been working as a Specialist Notetaker, Study Skills Support Tutor and Mentor for university students with disabilities, undertaking specialist training which includes working with Autistic and Visually Impaired students. In addition, I have a CELTA and a year's experience teaching classes in language schools. I have also tutored many children and adults in EFL, including for IELTS. Please contact me for availability as my calendar changes often, therefore I do not update it on this site. My lessons are always tailored to the individual needs and learning style of the student, so no two lessons are alike. However, I can offer some general pointers about my approach. For young children, my aim is to be fun and engaging - learning at this age should feel like play. For older children and teenagers, I aim to stretch and extend their abilities by building on existing strengths, while encouraging independence. When working with adults, the relationship is at the level of peer collaboration in a learning journey. I am a patient, kind tutor who cares about my students holistically, as unique individuals whom I have the privilege to inspire and support.

Perfect! Prep school English Tutor
My daughter is currently 4.5 and began with Ruby around 3.5 years old , after a summer break my daughter is now returning to English lessons. Ruby's method of educational play has made a great difference in my daughter's development within reading and maths. Ruby tutored me in essay writing during my studies and I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is patient, thorough and an excellent communicator. She is also very knowledgeable and clearly has an affinity for the written word. I wouldn't have succeeded without her.
Ruby is an amazing teacher. She is very patient and knowledgeable, and helped me learn how to structure and write academic essays. I couldn’t have got through my course without her support!
Ruby was a great help to our son when he needed to extend his writing skills for 13+ entrance exams.
